Whenever I try to update my ipod to 1.3 (I have a non-dock ipod hence i have to use this instead of 2.1) I get an error message saying that the update firmware is not compatible with my hardware, so it never allows the update to happen.. I got the error reported in the last couple posts only once, but every other time I have gotten this error.. I had initially put 2.1 on but then found that I wasnt supposed to so I reverted to 2.0, and since then I have been completely unable to put any music on my ipod, it causes my computer to freeze everytime I try.. does anyone know how to fix this? I would be greatly appreciative.. thanks

1.3 is for 1st and 2nd gen ipods thats why it will not work on a 3rd gen. You need to use the firmware that is made for your gen ipod.

however it says on macs website that the 2.1 update is for touch pad ipods without a dock which mine is...

tetsujin--

The way it is worded on the apple site is a little misleading. If you have one of the new 3rd generation iPods (including the 10 gig model that did not come with the dock) you need the 2.1 from Apple's website (or 2.01 from your original cd).

Basically, the 3rd generation iPods are capable of using a dock, whether they come with one or not. The 2nd generation can't use the dock because the cable won't plug into it.

Hope this helps--
