I can't believe this worked, but if you're having trouble updating your firmware to 1.3 and getting that annoying "iPod Service Error" message, try this:
1. Right click on Start and Hit "Explore."
2. Open Programs/iPod.
3. Go into the file labelled "Bin"
4. Drag "iPod Service icon" into folder labeled "Updater_1.3"
5. Restart computer.
You should now be able to update to firmware 1.3.
Not only am I now running 1.3, but my iPod is now being recognized by iTunes, and I just successfully synched my iTunes Library to my iPod.
You know, my problem was caused by an important module being stuck in the wrong folder (I think). I wonder is this folder thing could be behind other issues?
I hope this works for you. I was ready to tear my hear out.
BTW, I have Windows XP, built-in firewire, 2nd generation iPod.
