View Full Version : odd disk scan behavior

i have read the other posts about the disk scans, but i haven't found one that is quite like my problem.

whenever i plug my ipod into my mac, the ipod immediately starts a disk scan and always says that there is no errors, then it reboots and starts another disk scan and always has the same results. this loop is infinite.

if i unplug my ipod from my mac, and turn it on, i never get this problem, but i can't update the songs on my ipod, or anything for that matter.

??? whatever shall i do ???

My 3rd-gen 15GB has just done that too! It reset itself as I was connecting it to my Mac then started scanning, resetting, scanning, resetting. I unplugged it, then tried again. It mounted fine but now it says there are no songs on it.

I will have to restore, as it still says there is only 3GB of space left.

Any advice?

the drive never mounts, so it is not visible in disk utility.
also, it would probably cost less to buy another ipod from ebay, than get mine repaired

I'm having the same problem iPod works fine when disconnected,
every time I connect it seems to restart (Apple logo and then Disk Scan)
finishes with the Disk with an arrow in a box (Scan found issues with the hard disk, but was able to correct some or all of them).

The iPod Software 2.0 Updater can't see the ipod.
Apple System Profiler can't see it on the firewire port.
I've tried swapping ports with my Ext 60Gb, no joy.
If I hold down the selection button it just restarts the scan:confused:

I'd try to restore the firmware from the Updater. If you can't get it to mount, try putting it into forced firewire mode (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60950) (look at the link under "Scenario 9").

Otherwise, if that does not work, it sounds like the HDD may be having problems / going bad. If that's the case, I'd call Apple Support (http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html) to see about warranty repair / replacement.
