I've seen a lot of posts from people, such as myself, that have WinPods and seemingly no end of trouble between their iPod and Windows/USB. While I'm not a Windows "Expert" I do know it pretty well from a technical perspective and without boring you to death with all the technical details, suffice it to say that iPods, Windows and USB are, simply put, not a good combination.
If you're having trouble getting your Windows PC to work with your iPod, such as Windows only recognizing your iPod intermittently, Windows flat out refusing to recognize your iPod or if you're getting the dreaded "USB Device Not Found" error AND you're using a USB connector to connect your iPod to your PC, I think I may have found the Final Answer to your problems. Are you ready?
*** Buy a FireWire card. ***
There you go. That's the answer. (See, I told you I wasn't going to bore you with all the technical reasons. If you want them, PM me, I'll be happy to explain them in detail.)
Furthermore, it appears the "Gold Standard" of FireWire cards is the ADAPTEC FireConnect 4300 3-Port FireWire/1394 PCI card. They're not hard to find it seems and run roughly $40 (USD). Cheaper solutions are out there, but the 4300 is extremely well made and Certified by Apple. This "certification" by Apple, it seems, is very much a good thing.
So... hopefully this will help some of you out. While I haven't had any problems with my 5G and it's WinXP/USB connection, I'm planning on installing a 4300 anyway.
