i love my sony 51's so much, i bought a second pair a couple months ago
both pairs were for home use only, and were kept in very nice condition, but were recently replaced as my home pair by the shure e3g
three days ago, i got sick of listening to crap headphones that came free with my RCA mp3 player, which i use fer skool so i can keep my ipod nice, so i started using the ex51's
i carried the mp3 player and headphones in the included case in my front pocket when i wasn't using them
today, i realized that the cords really close to the buds felt lyk putty, the left one even started to "twist"
conclusion:
the sony ex 51, 71 and 81 cords are fine and will not fall apart if u leave them at home or any other activity that does not put stress and constant movement of the cords

Amazon gave me a replacement after 11 months and the cord is much better. :) I agree, the old EX71 had a very poor cable.

So is it true all new earbuds coming out of the factory have got these new stronger wires? If so, i'm getting the EX51's or the EX71's.

I've had my EX-71's for months now and they're doing fine. And any earbuds *I* own are in for a pretty rough-ride, day in-day out.

I've been reading some reviews, and my choice would be the EX51's, simply because they are cheaper, and I don't like the "behind-the-neck" wire. but a lot of review state the wiring problem I posted about in my previous post. Now sony has brought out the higher quality wiring, does this mean I automatically get the earbuds with the reviewed wires, or did they do it only short ago and the shops are still full of the 'old' buds? Of not I'm getting them shortly...

51's also have the behind the neck wire.

the "necklace cord" or whatever sony calls it is pretty annoying, but it is nice for when you have to take them out of your ears they'll just hang off your neck at your chest easily accessible for when you can cram them back into your ears

I've been using my EX 51s for about 4 months now and they're good and all.

For the money... all of those buds (51, 71, and 81) suck ### hard... unless you like the feeling of listening to music like you're in a hall with no bass. lol

VipFREAK, sounds like you didn't get a proper seal, that's why they sounded hollow to you.

The 51's have got the normal Y-shaped wire or am I wrong? I thought the LP in the name stood for something like long...., instead of the SL with the 71's which i thought was something like short....(short + extension).
Which is correct? (or both types if there are 2) Which EX51 model had the traditional Y-shaped wire?

Thanks, either way for $60 they arn't worth is and I took them(ex71) back. I don't use buds enough and it's only for portablilty, I'll probably start carrying around my PX200s again. Hell, the MX400s I have kick Sony's ### hard and I only got them for $6. lol

Can someone reply to my question about the desintegrating wires? If the problem is allready solved or still there...

The problem is solved. It's no longer an issue.
And also, all Sony earbuds have the behind the neck wire.
The difference is mainly that the 51s have no extension, but a normal length wire.

So I can order from Amazon now and have a stronger wire for the 51s?

I don't understand why people buy those headphoe with the constant reporst of the wires failing...seem like a pretty stupid purchase to me

Even if the wires were OK you'd still have to be pretty moronic to buy these. There are MUCH better, bassier, higher quality, less muddy, less sibilant in-ears available at much the same price point, and you can do better for less than the cost of the EX series.
Sennheiser CX300, for starters.

How do the Sennheiser CX300 compare to the Sony EX51's? Because these look very nice too:cool:

An audio enthiust told me if it's not on http://www.headphone.com/products/headphones/ to not get it. If you ask me, people are nuts to pay more than $50 for headphones unless it's in your profession.
Either way... I'd definitely go for quality Senns. over some ####ty overpriced Sony's... that's a no brainer in my book.

i use a pair of ex71s i got in july 2004 for about four hours a day at school ( 30 mins to school, 1 hr-lunch, 1 hr-off period, 49 min-total passing periods, 30 minutes home from school) i have used these headphones nearly every day since i got them and im just starting to notice the build up and twisting of the cables, but i treat them very carefully.

i dont see the build up and twisting of the cables. i have the Ex81s. i use them for working out, studying, snowboarding. and i havn't noticed anything yet, ive had them for about 5 months.
maybe because the 81's have the wrap around black piece which kinda reinforces the wires.

So I guess you don't mind the rustling sounds of the buds in your ear or the all tremble, no bass, hallway sound of the music?

there isnt 'no bass' just not as much, if i wanted huge bass i would listen to it in my car. For 30$ (i got them from amazon.com) its not bad. i mean, if i paid 60-80$ for the sony's (which i wouldnt) i'd be complaining.
if i had a chance to do it again i would of gotten the senn cx300 or the sharp md33's (i think they are the same thing).
by the looks of it, it seems like most ppl have the 71s. i've heard that they are pretty bad. But like i said i havn't had a problam w/the 81s which is a newer model, infact its not as much bass, but very crisp.
the only problem i have is the damn wrap around thing.

The wrap around the ears part was the only thing I thought was good about them but they are literally #### because of all the noise it mad and the piece of crap doesn't stay in the ear either.
Dayroc
03-13-2006, 09:51 PM
yea the wrap around thing does nothing, and when it touches or shifts around it makes noise. i wanna cut it out ! as for staying in the ear, there is a sweet spot in your ear, takes a while to find.

Can anyone tell me where to find these CX300 from Sennheiser for a more reasonable price than stated earlier in this thread?

If you google 'Sennheiser CX 300', you find quite a few vendors that sell at less than the price mentioned above.
