ok, here's the deal.

i owned a 4 GB mini which got to be too small for me. so i bought a 40 GB (3rd or 4th gen, it says 2003 on the back) used. so it has all this music i don't want on it.

so i plug it in, and it syncs with the computer. i restore it. it tells me to unplug it, then plug it back in to add music onto it. i have my itunes on auto.

when i plug it back in, though, it tells me it's not recognized, and some error message. and now on the screen, all i can get is an apple to show up, then a image of the thing being plugged into the ipod.

i tried to manually reset it, but no luck. :(

when i unplug it now, and plug it back in, windows gives me an error, telling me the device has malfuntioned and can't be recognized.

the screen then shows an apple, and an image of the plug being plugged into the ipod.

from what i've read at apple.com, this thing is fried. i can only hope it's not true and i wasted $180 on this.

No you need to plug it into an outlet to finish the iPod restore.

Sounds like you do. They run about $30 in my part of town. And it sounds like your iPod is responding normally, so before you trash it, get a wall charger and let it finish restoring. I don't think there's a thing wrong with your 'Pod.

It sounds like you've done a full blown Restore on your iPod, which would make sense since you bought it used. The Restore function resets the iPod back it's factory settings, just like it came out of the box. In order to complete this operation however, it needs to be plugged into the wall charger (nothing else will do). Once you've done that, the firmware will reset itself and, hopefully, joy follows.

If not, keep your receipt and return your wall charger.

ok,

i bought one, plugged it in, and still got the same thing, where an apple comes up and then a 'plug' comes up on the screen.

so i tried to plug it into the computer again, and the computer again wouldn't recognize it :(

Okay... Just so I'm 110% clear on this...

You're seeing the icon, shown HERE (http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/ipodicons/index.shtml) : and labeled "Electrical Outlet"?

If you have a 3G iPod then you must have a firewire cable not a usb cable. The 3G is firewire not usb. The 3rd gen is the one with the 4 buttons above the wheel. Make sure your cable is a firewire cable & your plugging it into a 6 pin firewire port to charge it. It won't charge on a 4 pin.

well i was using a usb cable and it wasn't recognizing. but i'm still having a problem.

i put in my fireward card and plug the ipod into it with the firewire card...and now finally the computer is recognizing it but itunes won't...

Try disconnecting the iPod & restarting your computer and reset the iPod. Also look in 'my computer' and post what letter it is showing as in that section.

i actually lied, the computer isn't recognizing the ipod. it's recognizing the firewire card that i put in. but nowhere on this computer is it recognizing the ipod.

i've tried shutting down and rebooting and it's a no go.

this is unreal.

still getting the weird plug image after the apple. and the computer won't recognize it at all when i plug it into the firewire, where at least when i plug it in to the usb, it says 'device not recognized.'

at this point, i'm going to be upset that i spent more than $300 on a used 40 GB 3rd generation ipod after firewire and all that. when i could have gotten a brand new 30 GB and had no problems at all.

If you have the folder w/! you need to restore it and see if it works. If you can't get it to work then you can sell it on ebay.

from what i've read on the apple.com discussion board, other people are having this problem and it's because they updated their ipod with the latest ipod updater and it messed their ipod up.

Well maybe one of the legacy updaters would solve your problem then? This link will take you to a download page the iPod Updater that is dated 15 NOV 2005 (http://www.softpedia.com/get/IPOD-TOOLS/Other-IPOD-tools-Updates/iPod-Update.shtml).

For some reason I am determined to see this iPod work.

Edit: Corrected Link...

the bad news: i went to the apple store and they told me the hard drive was fried.

the good news: i'm the owner of a new 30 GB ipod.

Saying a little silent "prayer" that everything goes well for you. You deserve a little 'good Karma'.

I'd check the charge level first. And you have the Apple software installed, right? Not just iTunes but the Updater, etc? If not, install them. Then connect your 'Pod and cross your fingers.

Also, here's the Apple tutorial on 5G Video, And You (http://www.apple.com/support/ipod101/photo/4/).
