Okay, I searched and didn't find this, so I dunno if anyone has ever seen it before or not, so here goes:

I recently deleted all my old iPod updaters and downloaded the most recent one 2006-1-10 I think. Anyway, my iPod hadn't been used in a while (lost my job where I used it daily) and I plugged it in to my PC. Well...iTunes froze up...after playing around I finally got the thing to recognize my iPod...it began updating and it went to a BSOD with this:

***Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error
*** The System has halted ***

I have to shut it down and if I restart with the iPod connected I get another screen saying something about the k: drive being dirty (this is the drive the iPod shows up on). I have formated it and reinstalled the original updater. Again, when connecting through the firewire I got the above error. Usually around 200 - 250 songs into it.

I am currently trying to update with USB - don't know if it will do the same thing or not.

Anyone ever seen this? Any suggestions? I prefer firewire, but if USB works I'll stick with it I guess.

I have a Dell 8400 P4 3.2gig with 1gig of memory, XP Pro SP2, etc.

Thanks!

I've got the exact same error and almost identical hardware.

My computer is a Dell Dimension 8400 P4 3.0 Ghz, 1 Gb RAM, etc. iPod is a 4G 40 Gb with click wheel.

Yesterday I put it in the dock (using firewire as always). iTunes is not currently configured to launch automatically so I clicked it's icon. Then I got the same error:

***Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error
*** The System has halted ***

A few months ago I installed RealPlayer. It changed the AutoPlay settings so that when the iPod was connected I'd get a box offering to start RealPlayer or Do Nothing. Before that iTunes would start automatically.

About a month or so after that I started getting the following error after plugging in my iPod and starting iTunes:

'Windows - No Disk"
"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive."
- Cancel - Try Again - Continue -

Hitting Cancel twice usually got me past it and all was fine.

Recently I've turned off all of my startup Services and programs using MSCONFIG (before this error). Turned off items included iTunesHelper.exe and iPod Service. A service that is running is called StarWind iSCSI Service which was installed with the trial of Alcohol 120% - which may be related to this problem I suspect.

Anyone got any other ideas before I go crashingn my system a bunch of times testing the fixes?
