Billionth Song!!!

J/W...when will the 1 billionth song likely be downloaded tomorrow, in the next couple days, a week from now?

that would be awesome to win lol. what would you do with the 10 ipods keep, sell'em, or be nice and give'em away.

Okay, I've timed how fast the songs are going and they are currently around 100 songs every 7 seconds! 44 million more songs need to be downloaded to reach 1 billion. If my calculations are correct the 1 billionth song will be downloaded sometime on March 15. Of course as time gets closer people may be downloading more. Also, this calculation was done when the US/Canada was in the middle of the night and I would assume a majority of the songs are downloaded by North Americans. I may redo calculations tomorrow and update.

If I were to win 10 iPod videos I think I would probably give them to family members. And the $10,000 iTunes gift card....mmmmm - I don't even know what I would do with that many songs. I think I would just be downloading to be downloading. Then again I could get completely legal!

The 958 millionth song was just purchased. That means in 15 hours over 2 million songs have been purchased so my previous post of the billionth song being downloaded in March is way off. At the current rate we should see the billionth around the 23rd of February. Also, I noticed that as the song count reaches the hundred thousand mark the count goes a lot faster for those hoping to win the nano and $100 iTunes gift card.

anypats - Those calculations sound pretty good, but I was just wondering...Does anyone know how accurate (if at all) the counter on Apple's website is? Thanks.

I think the counter is really accurate.

I noticed that if you just sit and watch the counter, it becomes innacurate. Refreshing makes it more accurate. Man, if I won 10 ipods..... I would have a lot of happy friends!! But having another nano would be cool, I would use one for audio books and one for music :D.

I think this big contest/promotion will cause people to buy more and more. Hell, I'm thinking of buying a few things myself. Thus, speeding up the rate of the counter. Know what I'm saying?

I don't know how long it has been like this, but I just noticed that the counter has been changed to only show the count to the thousand instead of to the song. Right now it seems to be moving at more than 1,000 songs per minute.

Only 7.5 million songs to go...if the same rate continues my guess of around 23rd of February should be fairly accurate.
