Just picked up the SLVR phone. I like it. Not much bigger than a nano.
Yes I know it only hold 100 songs but remember its primary use is a phone. It took maybe 10 minutes to transfer 100 songs out of iTunes. I didn't think it was slow. Sleek design. cool back lighting on the keypad. Nice color screen. Lightweight but sturdy. I used my nano ears phones and the sound was very good. The ear buds that come with it were too big in diameter to be comfortable. This will replace my shuffle.

It looks pretty cool. I'm just turned off from the line due to the RAZR, and how cheap it looked (and turned out to be). Hopefully it will serve you well.

So, technically it's exactly the same as the ROKR E1, but with a RAZR look?

...I dun like that kind. Too fragile. ...unless someone can prove it's sturdier than a ROKR E1, I'm gonna buy it (the ROKR) at the end of the month.

No. The ROKR is exactly the same as the Motorola E398 but it's branded with iTunes. The SLVR L7 is a quad band phone and I've heard it supports EDGE although that might just be a rumor. The L7 is a superior phone, though. Like I said, the ROKR is based off the E398 and I've owned my E398 for two years now. The L7 is only about 6 months old.

...yeah, but is it sturdier? It looks like it could easily snap under pressure. And before you say, keep it in a beltclip, I dun use belt clips, it has to stay hidden in my line of work, in my pocket. That's my main worry. I dun mind sacrificing some new features. All I care about is the music, and the phone, and its durability. ESPECIALLY its durability. Has to last for 2 years. U know, the contract.

edit: and the bluetooth :P

I'm like you - my phone has to stay in my pocket and from what I hear, this is a very sturdy little phone. The main complaint I hear about it is that the keypad is too small for people with rather 'robust' fingers:p If you're in the market for a new phone, I'd definitely say go with the L7 over the ROKR (and this is coming from someone that basically owns the ROKR)

I just got one of these phones a couple weeks ago, and so far I'm very happy with it. I keep mine in my pocket and it seems very sturdy.

I've been using it with a pair of black Griffin EarThumps. Definitley better sound than the included earbuds.

The 100 song limit is OK for a phone, and the upload time is much shorter than the 50 minutes I've seen thrown around for the ROKR. Besides, once you load it up the first time, you're probably only going to be changing a few tracks at a time.

One thing I really like about the phone is that I can put my own MP3 ringtones, wallpapers, even 3GP movies. It always kills me that providers charge more for ringtones than iTunes does for the whole track.

You can't use tracks from the iTunes library as ringtones, but you can always burn the track to CD, re-rip as an MP3, and then upload it to your phone.

Umm... wow, that's pretty small. I think I might be heading toward this one, I am really tired of these ####ty ### verizon clamshells. My plan ends in Dec. so hopefully there's some other new bandwagon phone that comes out to make people want it and drop the prices of this phone. lol

Does it happen to do voice recording? and if so for how long?

Quick Question about SLVR:

I just got a Motorola SLVR as well. I do not think I have a Itune application in my SLVR. Do you know where to download it or where exactly is the application in the phone? please help. Thanks.

In addition, what is the best way to sync music from Itune with the SLVR phone?

Some SLVRs don't come with iTunes.

I personally don't need iTunes on a phone. It's a phone, not an iPod. I plan to get the iTunes-less one for $50 less.

Well, I don't have one, but my rich friend does (I'm so jealous). I have him in my PE class and my opinion of the SLVR is that it's pretty cool and definitely sturdier than I thought it would be.

The only thing that I'm gonna say I didn't like about it was that it's speaker is located on the back of the unit. Also, you can't use iTunes music as a ringtone (but that's the same with the ROKR).

Back to the sturdiness: as I said, this guy is loaded so he isn't too careful with the phone. In fact, I've seen him drop it from about five feet onto concrete about five times. Still, the only damage that was done to the phone was an almost imperceptible scratch on the bottom. I would've expected the thing to break in half (it's almost as thin as the nano), but it held up.

Overall, it's pretty cool. Anyway, it's definitely better than the ROKR.

try googling the 1000 song itunes hack for the motorola slvr, then you can max out your memory card with as many songs as possible (some people have used 2gb sd cards and it works a treat)

I love my SLVR phone! Had it since March and I dropped it (from my jacket to the cement drive way) and on laminate floors from kitchen table and it still has no marks or blemishes from either fall.
It's a solid phone and I use it on walks and running and with head phones it is louder and clearer than my shuffle or my mini.
only thing I don't like is the usb dongle adapter for head phones wish it had it's own speaker jack. Sometimes you forget to bring that dongle with you and you can't listen to your SLVR itunes collection privately.
I bought the Motorola SLVR case (which works fine as far as protection goes) but it's gawdy and bulky on your belt (which I don't like to wear but clipped it to my backpack when traveling)
good phone all the way around, I bet the SLVR 2.0 vs will have a seperate headphone jack it just would make sense. Also, would be cool to use i tunes songs for ring tones as well.
Highly recomended phone!

I was thinking about getting a slvr, but decided against it because of what a friend told me. Apparantly it's uninsurable. The cell phone insurance companies will not insure it, therefore if you break it, you have to pay full price for a new phone. So be careful...

I don't like the OS on Motorola's phones, but the actual design of the hardware is top notch.

I just got this phone free today at Best Buy. One for me, one for my husband and 2 $15 iTunes giftcards! I had planned to switch from Sprint anyway, this is a nice bonus!

I love the sleekness of my SLVR. I don't have iTunes on it but I'll look into that hack. I love my iPod mini so I don't think I'd use the iTunes program on my phone too much anyway. I found the transfer rate to be a bit slow, though. Well, a lot slower than transferring from my computer to my Mini. It's a great phone though.

emphoto2003, wow, what a great deal!

So far I'm loving the phone. I was able to figure out how to upload my own mp3's to set as ringtones and my photos to use as wallpaper. I was surprised to find out that you can't insure it. What gives? The guy who sold it to me said I could (i'm sure he was just saying that).

Does anyone know if you can take off the "Cingular" display on the wallpaper? On my own phone you could change it to say what you want, but I'm not seeing any way to do that with this phone.

The L7 SLVR has a metal housing so it's quite durable. I had 1 for a little while... not my type of phone because it lacks features. The L7 is a lot like the ROKR because they are basically the same phones. Both have VGA cames, TF slot and firmware is very similar. The best iTunes equiped phone at the moment is prob the moto V3i... That'd be my choice outta that lineup. I highly dislike the UI on moto phones.

It says right on the Cingular site that the L7 SLVR cannot be insured. Here is the link:

The Slvr L7 is a great little phone, got mine for $30 with a free Moto H3 Bluetooth headset. All these people looking for a way to get iTunes on a phone without it, good luck. It is my understanding that you cannot. However, you may ask the people at HoFo:http://howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=38 and I am sure they could tell you more.

To those questioning the phones durability, I am quite the large man and I have it in my pocket all day, most of the time driving with it pinned between me and the door. This has never caused any damage. I have dropped it and actually used it(not that I don't baby it, but I don't completly baby the thing) and it still looks like day one. My brother also has this phone and I know he drops his constantly, his past phones prove it, but his also looks like day one. These are quite the tough little phones.

Ok...For all the SLVR experts out there. I'm having a problem downloading songs. At one time I had 100 songs and filled the phone up. Then I decided to change songs here and there and take a few pictures. Well, since then I figured I could only have say 75 songs and 15 pictures...but for some reason that's not the case. I now have:

71 songs, 4.6 hours, 261.6 MB on the phone

But, when I open Itunes on my laptop and (while Itunes is open) it says Used: 433.4 MB Free: 50.53

I only have one picture on the phone now and it was taken with the phone and used as wallpaper. I have even deleted the Cingular free pictures with the exception of the locked pictures.

Anyone have any ideas??

I tried calling Cingular but the tech's there don't seem to have a clue.

Thanks

-J

i wonder what moto's new razer might look like. i mean they can't improve that much....

It's longer and narrower across the width of the phone, and has a high gloss finish over the different colors. The one I saw was a nice metallic midnight blue. It looks nice, and the leaner width is appealing to me because I always thought the RAZR was too fat.

the phone is the RAZR K1 and is expected for Verizon (no, NOT Cingular or TMobile) sometime in early 2007. It has not been formally released by motorola as of yet.

I've seen it mentioned a couple times in this thread that you can't use iTunes songs as ringtones. I assume that means songs purchased from iTunes and not mp3's you made yourself, correct?

I'm trying to decide between the RAZR and SLVR for my wife for an x-mas present.

Well, more specifically you can't use tracks transferred from iTunes as ringtones. The iTunes portion of the phone is separate from the normal media management portion.

You could obviously take an MP3 file that you have in iTunes and manually transfer it to the phone using whatever normal ring-tone transfer process is available for that particular model of phone, but you cannot simply assign a track that was loaded on through iTunes.

I have the V220 and I've used MotoTools or whatever that piece of junk software is to transfer ringtones to it. Can you tell me if there is an easier way with the SLVR L7, or RAZR V3r or V3i (I know the V3r is not iTunes)? Like drag and drop over USB?

So... how do you make ringtones out of Mp3s? BTW, I have the Sprint version no iTunes(thankfully) Slvr L7c.So you have an unprotected mp3? There are programs to chop off portions of mp3's. The one I've used is called mp3 splitter joiner. Here's the link (http://www.ezsoftmagic.com/), but it's not free. Maybe someone knows a free one.

Well no... I theoretically thought I knew how to make a ringtone but it doesn't physically let me choose the Mp3 as a ringtone. Like Jay says... I can't select and assign the file as a ringtone. As for unprotected/protected I don't see why that matters if they've locked you out of that feature on the phone which I think they did.

BTW, Audacity FTW.

I know that my RAZR v3i will take a transferred MP3 or even an M4A file as a ringtone, but it has to be transferred to the memory card and/or phone using the normal file-transfer methods (NOT iTunes). Simply sending them via Bluetooth works just fine for me.

There may be an upper limit on how large of an MP3/M4A file can be sets as a ringtone, but I'm not certain as all the files I use are naturally shorter snippets of audio (I've created a few myself using Garageband loops).

I know there's EVERYTHING for the Razr because everyone and their mother has one but is there a guide or spec sheet to tell me what I can ACTUALLY do with this Slvr?! It's a bit irritating to have the assumption I can do stuff and then not actually do them.
