Ok so I tried to solve this problem in depth on the apple.com/support site, but they don't have an answer for this.

Whenever I turn my iPod, it shows a folder with an exclamation mark...so I go to reformat my iPod and it starts formatting and then says "Firmware blah blah blah - disk write error"

what the heck.

so I call my local iPod store and they say the minimum to simply work on it is $200.

AAAAGHHHH! I might as well just buy a new one.

but all it needs is a reformat...please help me guys if you can, I will love you all forever.

Sean in California, ####ed off and confused.

edit: Oh yeah, I have a 4G 20GB iPod. Thanks in advance.

yeah i have this problem alot. Im so glad i got a 3 yr warranty thru best buy when i got my ipod. i must be on my 7th one by now. they last about 3,4 months, then i get the same b.s. with the exclamation point and firmware errors. apple really needs to step it up and start making a better quality product. im about to go up to best buy today as my newest ipod just died on me. its a little bit of a hassle but it beats the hell outta spendin 300 on a new one.

There was some discussion of a possible solution on the Apple Discussion board: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=544840&tstart=0

The tool from the discussion should be located here: http://www.ipodwizard.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=8274&d=1146429146
