I have been curious about the uneven cord length of Sony MDR-EX 71 for some time. Can someone tell me the reason that Sony design it this way?

Thanks.

Can't tell you for certain, but Sony has been doing it this way since the very first Fontopia earbuds they released.

Why do so many poeple dont like the uneven cords??? I personally hate the Y shaped cords as you can't use 1 earphone without having it dangling down the ears.

Curious is not equal to "don't like". :o ;)

No one seems to have answered the original question so far... :p

I believe it's designed this way so that when worn, the longer cord goes behind your head and rests on the back of your neck. This allows you to pull one or both phones out of your ears and not fall to the floor when not in use.

I could never get used to wearing them this way. Winter makes this especially tough, as the "right" cord always seems to be getting caught in my scarf and pulling that side out slightly - which, as we know, blows the balance completely.

As this is my third pair (they don't build the cable particularly well; status quo for Sony) I am thinking about moving on to the Sennheiser CX300 - same basic design, but construction looks to be a bit more solid. Not to mention I adore my HD560 II home headset.

I bought one pair of the Sonys and the cord was damaged within 2 weeks just from wearing at work. I won't buy Sony again. My Sennheiser CX100 set has lasted 6 months now and barely shows the wear.

Thanks for the Sennheiser tip! My "big" Sennheisers went ten years of not-too-nice treatment before needing a new cable, but frankly I didn't like any of their other portable designs. Until now!
