copying from Ipod to computer with Itunes installed

I have downloaded ipodutil to copy songs from my ipod onto my computer. However I am concerned since I have itunes and it automatically syncs when I plug my Ipod in will this over wright the songs I have on my ipod or will ipodutil start first before Itunes can sync?

iTunes will start before PodUtil starts. so if the songs you have in you iPod are not in iTunes, there is a possibility that those songs on your iPod that you want to download with PodUtil will be erased.

Same thing here. I just downloaded PodUtil I went to plug it in and realized the iTunes opens and start syncing (and thus erasing my music) before PodUtil starts. I tried to switch setting to manually update the music but it still starts syncing while I change the settings. WTF? Am I destined to loose some of my music regardless.
