ok i have a new ipod, my 3rd replacement! i can't upload any more that 8.2 gig on to the bugger! - have spent hours and hours, even reformatted my pc! also installed the latest itunes and ipod software, as well as the basic settings. i get the error below come up, or one similar, or it just hangs. If you hold it to your ear it goes in a loop of spinning and then shutting down the hard drive. tried so many times.... any ideas guys?

eject your ipod from the computer and try a reset. if that doesn't work, try a restore (but make sure that your music is backed up. if none of that works, you might have a 4th replacement ipod in your future.

How can all your iPods be so bad? I've had my mini for about 6-7 months, and there hasn't been a problem yet. You must be unlucky to iPods...

Those errors were ones I had with our 5G, which were solved with a restore (or a disk chk).
It does begin to seem suspicious that you are having so many problems with ipods on that one computer. Have you ever had one work?
Do you have different USB ports to try? I had problems with a USB2 which had worked perfectly for previous mp3 players. Switched to another, and all was well. (Just something else to try.)

well the first one worked for 5months and then got the unhappy face, they sent me a new one, and that had the unhappy face come up. This one then was sent and i have this issue, right now i'm on my work pc, just loaded on 20gig of mp3's to 'test' and installed Itunes, went to drag the files across, it made 2.2gig and then just stopped, tried the restore and no joy.

Rung up apple, complained like anything went on hold for 20mins, demanded a customer service manager on the phone, he agreed to ‘upgrade me’ and send me an IPOD video in replacement for my 3rd IPOD photo, well pleased and feel I deserve it after my bad run. Very happy with the outcome now.

From the various errors you were getting, it definitely sounds like the internal hard disk was faulty or corrupt. Excellent news about the replacement  .
