Hey everyone, I'm looking to find some good hip hop.

I know there is a guy on here with extensive knowledge in this genre so if you see this help me out! Or, if anyone knows what his name is tell me and I will send him a PM. But to give you an idea, I'm looking for artists like:

Deltron 3030
Aesop Rock
Sage Francis
Dan The Automator
MF Doom
Madvillain
Murs

So whos got some good ideas for me?

iMacc

I'm not 'the guy' but i'll recommend some classic stuff anyway.

De La Soul
Kanye West
Common
A Tribe Called Quest
Gang Starr
Jurassic 5
DangerDoom (MF Doom + Dangermouse)
Del Tha Funky Homosapian (Deltron)
The Roots

Looks good and I was trying to remember Jurassic 5. I used to listen to more rap but I got into metal. I just want some more hip-hop to get a flow going.

I like rap but hate how everything has no meaning, most hip hop has a meaning, thanks iMacc!

Any others?

Doug Gilmour

Not my forte by any means, but I'll add a few more for what it's worth...

Boogie Down Productions
cLOUDDEAD
DJ Shadow
Edan
EPMD
Eric B. & Rakim
KRS-One
Mr. Lif
Public Enemy
The Herbaliser

Heiroglyphics (Del's other group.)

Otherwise iMacc and Dan (Doug Gilmour) had pretty nice lists.

And the all-knowing guy you mentioned in the original post is Enjoilax.

I never saw Nas' name on any of the list, so I thought I would add it. Nas is arguably the greatest lyricist in the hip hop game.

I'm going to have to add Illogic to that list. IMO he's one of the best lyricists I've ever heard.

Thanks for this post! It was really helpful!

The only one i can see is Lauryn Hill as shes more neo-soul than hip-hop, maybe some of the insturmental hip-hop shouldn't be there, but i digress its still hip-hop.

Well to be honest, it seems like most of your list is made from a bootlegged collection.

Ghostface - The Pretty Toney Album Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele

You're kidding me right?

Why don't you criticize like the actual list as opposed to whether or not I pirated something? Thats a pretty heavy thing to say about another person, without having any kind of substantial proof clown sack.

Ouch, didnt have to bite back that much. Though I must say, you do have a few artist there with a few missing albums that should be mentioned. Things that arent properly tagged always amuse me. I wont take this any further.

TheLastSession, I recommend Rob Swifts new album Soulful Fruit which is a nice listen and it the kind thing you are looking for. A more contemporay group is also Zion I with True and Livin' great album!

some oldies you should like include:

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx

Scarface - The Fix

Mobb Deep - Juvenile Hell ( I think its one of their albums that has that early 90's feel)

oh and L.e.g.a.c.y.'s Project Mayhem which droped last year is a nice listen too.

iMacc

So first of all enjoilax can't spell, now you are nit-picking that he hasn't got perfectly tagged albums.

white noise? FOOL.

Yes there are alot of artists, but the best ones get stuck with that label. I would be more inclined to call them turntabilists as opposed to insturmental hip-hop but its easier to get an idea wi/ the latter.

RJD2, Blockhead, Nujabes, Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, Pete Rock, basically any producer who has no vocals on his record.
Also the easiest way to get into hip-hop as you see true creativity when the beat is not made for someone to rhyme over. Its just ~5 mins of aural exploration.

edit - Mixmaster Mike, Kid Koala, Madlib - Shades Of Blue, Quasimoto - The Unseen (Instrumentals)

Still no mention of K-OS? his recent album Joyful Rebellion is an album I would highly recommend you go and buy now. Today I managed to pick up his debut album 'Exit' which is hard to find, considering it was first released in Canada. This is something also recommended. :)

Something i never understood. I dont' like country music, so I don't go to thread and comment on country music. Why must you spoil our thread?

As for the education, you need to sit down son and listen, watch and learn. What he was refering to as turntablisms is a subgenre of hip-hop, not rap.

Not a huge hip-hop fan, and I'm not 100% sure if you can classify these guys as hip-hop, but I picked up a tape by a group called Street Military, and it is a good 15 years old, but I was really impressed, because it was definitely a lower budget recording.

But as far as more mainstream goes, I didn't see a whole lot about Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five. Probably one of my favorite hip-hop groups of all time, and Flash was and is the man.

Good to see we have a lot of hip hop fans here, didn't realise it.

I brought Grayskul - Deadlivers yesterday, which was released in late 2004...great album, you can really get involved into their music has such a dark feel to it.
Has guest appearances from Mr Lif, Canibus, Aesop Rock, Abstract Rude & Oldominion.

Been listening to a lot of old De La Soul albums (De La Is Dead mainly) classic material, The Grind Date their most recent release is another great album. Love the track with Ghostface.

If you want a good new hip hop instrumental album check out J-Dilla - Donuts...one of the best producers going around Dilla.

I'm a writer/reviewer, have written for sites such as www.sixshot.com
www.hoodrich.net
I'm hired at a new site, which is being constructed now and will be open in 10-15 days called Streetcorporate which will be a very big site.

Any of you post at any hip hop forums ?

skp2mylou what an interesting name, so interesting in fact that i dug deep and found it, here are some of the lyrics

"This is a world premier and I'm here
A presentation beyond compare
So MC's step to the rear as I break through
Girls say ooh and then skip to my loo
That means dance as I get smooth with
Poetic perfection that you can groove with"

it's hard being the kane - big daddy kane

Hell yeah Louis Logic has some great albums, no one's mentioned Pharoahe Monch yet or his group Organized Konfusion.

Monch's solo album is a classic (Internal Affairs) and both Organized Konfusion are both very very dope albums.
