I am receiving from Apple, within a couple of days, my replacement 40GB Color Ipod. I have about 3000 songs stored on Itunes. Can I somehow transfer them to my new Ipod (when it arrives)? The song files were ripped originally from CD's that I own......it took me about three weeks to do so. There must be some way not to have to "rip" all the songs from my original, store bought CD's, because after transferring them to Itunes I deleted the files to save space on my computer. And I'm a newbie, so if anyone could help me that would be great, but I'm looking for a little more specific direction than "just reload your software and it should work" if possible. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Speaking of which, do I have to "reload software"? Any direction to a place I can find help would be great.

Just connect the iPod since the software is already on the computer. If you didn't back up your library, which you should have then you will rerip the songs. If you know magic then you won't have to rerip the CD's and can just make them reappear.

From now on back up your library to data disk and you won't have this problem. It will be easy to populate iTunes again if need be. Data disk will preserve the song tags and any artwork included.

Thanks Honeybee. I'm pretty sure I didn't "back up" the data, and am understanding you to mean "put it on a backup CDRW, pacinoserpico, you dumblehead." (you can see what I mean by the term newbie). I will ensure to do that this next time around. Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated! I will report on my progress and try to conclude this strand so no one else makes the stupid mistake I did. By the way, I've gotta say - highly impressed with Apple....it took them one week exactly to get my Ipod back to me (from the day I shipped it), and it even got delivered for free to my door - especially impressive, since I don't live in the U.S. Having said that, I havn't tried my new model yet, so I better not break out the fireworks just yet.....

Well, I guess I was able to pull some magic out of my arse after all, as the update on my Ipod worked without a hitch, and without any backup files. So it IS POSSIBLE to reupdate a replaced ipod without the use of "backed-up" song rips from owned discs. Cheers
