Know how you hold the >|| button down for a couple of seconds to shut the thing off? Well, sometimes I do that and it doesn't. No matter how long I hold it, how hard I push it it won't shut down. The sucker will play through my entire library again and again till the battery runs down. Then it is mysteriously reset and works again. Any clues? am I doing something to confuse it?

Press the pause button and pause the iPod so that it won't play through your library. Then wait a few minutes until the HD stops spinning. Other choice is to do a restore.

Um... excuse me if this is the wrong alternative, but can't you also just reset the pod? This happens to our 60GB 4G every few weeks (you can pause the music, but the iPod will not turn off, no matter what), and I fix it by holding the center button and the menu button simultaneously and resetting the pod. It 'reboots,' the Apple logo comes up as if it were turning on after a cold start, and all is fine, solving the problem.

I would imagine if this happens frequently you might need another fix, but this handles the occasional lock-up for us. Hope it helps.

I have similar problems, and I have had them for at least three months. Sometimes it can't be shut down by the pause button. But I noticed that I can turn it off with my remote's pause button instead.

When this problem happens the Ipod drains the battery in about a half an hour. Even if it's completely freshly charged. And when this happens I have to reset the Ipod. Then I can use it for perhaps a week or so, then it happens again.

I have done everything that one is supposed to do when having problems. Hopefully someone knows why this happens. I'm starting to wonder if it's because of my computer perhaps? I mean, the Ipod works most of the time, but gets mad now and then. So if I return it, there's no guarantee that they will find any fault.

It's bugging me.

I am having the same problem, Sebastian. I use a iHome speaker system and the only way my iPod will turn off is if I dock it to the iHome and turn if off from there. If I dont it just drains my batteries

Unless, I'm getting the sequence wrong, it won't reboot either. It just won't turn on. ????

Any suggestions.

Um, sounds like it just ran out of juice, plug it back in and it will likely restart. You don't need to hold pause, only press it once and the iPod will stop its harddrive and shut down after that. It shouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

Mine randomly does this ALL the time. Tonight I had to leave it on ALL during class till it finally shut off. That took forever. This is annoying. Does anyone know if the video iPod has the same problems?
Any solutions for my current iPod Photo?

I think Puchu was on the right track. It seems to happen to me when I have my Ipod attached to my Kipsch IFi. When I turn off the speaker system but leave the Ipod running for extended periods of time, I am not able to shut down the Ipod. I have tried everything and the the only way I have been able to fix the situation is to reset the Ipod entirely. I have learned to remember to turn off the IPod too!

My 5.5G will do this occasionally. I have to pause the song (which I do anyways), then wait for the hard drive to stop spinning before I can turn it off with the play/pause button.

I stumbled across a fix I think. I have the 5.5g and I just got this power-off problem. From reading through this list I decided it MIGHT have something to do with the lock switch. I cycled the switch to LOCK and back and voila, problem fixed.

Try it.
