Tranfering songs

do i have to check all the songs to keep them? say if i wanna add one song, am i gonna have to check all the songs, that seems to happen to my ipod

if i wanna just add one more song, do i have to check the box and that one song in order for the to still be there.

i tryed checkin one song and then updated and then that song was all i had in the ipod, all the other ones were deleted

Sounds like you are trying to manually synch your iPod. If you want to do this you have to check the options that says manage you iPod manually. If you are set to auto sync, all you have to do is ensure that all the songs you want transfered are checked and update it. iTunes will automatically know which songs are new and transfer any new songs since your last sync.
