How does iPod recognise Compilations? (not using iTunes)

I don't use iTunes and use EAC/LAME, MP3Gain and then MediaMonkey to xfer songs to iPod.

My iPod recognised 4 albums as Compilations (when I turned compilations option on) but I can't work out what it is using to do this.

The <Album Artist> field is blank in all cases. The only thing is that there are multiple artists for the one album.

The CDDB data for the album has the "Compilations" setting set to "Y" which is stored in one of the MP3 tags. Use a good tagging program and you can find the field.
