I have a 2gig, so about how much music can I have on with album art, as opposed to without it? also, what is the maximum resolution for viewing art on the nano?(for resizing purposes)

I don't know about the resizing question. But the space shouldn't be mroe then 10 megabytes if you have your nano completely full

I was under the impression that the art was resized as you add it to the tracks and they are copied to the iPod ???

What about if you put the album art into the original library files though (which I usually HAVE to else it doesnt show on the ipod), nothing comes up saying they're being compressed that way round.

There may not be any confirmation, but im pretty sure it must resize, as there is some cache file somewhere I have seen. It may be in my album art folder.

Plus, it would be a bit silly if it was copying over 250kb jpegs etc.

Just as an aside, I'm curious how much space will be taken away from music storage for each of the other features (e.g., contacts, schedule, album covers, photos, lyrics etc.). Also, how much space is used up with a 30 minute podcast.

(Basically, I want to get a general idea of the "trade-off" factor...Apple says that the 4GB Nano will hold approx. 1000 songs, so how much of that will I lose if I start using these other features)?

I would also really like to know this. I just got a new ipod!

Well, that's one of those things you have to calculate yourself, since everybody's files are different. For instance, Apple's claim of 1,000 songs is based on an average runtime of 4 minutes for 128Kbps AAC songs. At that bitrate, you can expect to use about 1MB for each minute of material. OTOH, if you're using a lossless format like AIFF (1411Kbps), you can expect to use up about 10MB for each minute of material.

So for your 30-minute podcast, it depends on the bitrate -- at 128kbps it's around 30MB; at 192 Kbps it's around 45MB; 256Kbps ~= 60MB; etc.

For album art -- embedded in the track -- it just depends on the file you decide to use. Most of my art weighs in at 30-40KB per image; other folks like to use "big" art, suitable for big screen viewing, at 250KB or higher. Lyrics typically consume their own weight in characters (maybe double that for Unicode?).

Photos that are sync'd to the iPod are filtered by iTunes; optimized for iPod display by lowering the resolution. I don't sync photos, but IIRC iTunes shoots for around 1MB per photo.

Stuff stored on the iPod-as-a-hard-drive is just as big as it is. If you put a 12MB photo file on the Nano in hard dive mode, you've just "spent" 12MB. I've got about 250 text notes on my iPod; they take up about 1MB (minimum file size is 4K, times 250).

You could check out this article on bitrates and file sizes (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/ask-ilounge-11-2-07/) (2nd "question" in the list); do your own calculatin' with iLounge's Storage Calculator (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ipod/calculator/).
