Just started using Shure e2's.
Sound quality is quite good. Jury is still out on comfort (foamies stuffed into my ear canal just not comfortable)...
Still use iPod buds for convenience of just popping on-off. Shures are for more *serious* ;) prolonged listening...

Yep, using the apple earbuds, decent sound quality, fairly comfortable in my ears - and after spending the big bucks on the ipod and a new g4 powerbook (15.2"/80gb/superdrive/airport extreme/etc.) I think I'll be using them for awhile...though Christmas is coming :-)

yeah, I actually just started using them today. I had found some ear buds i had never used from a previous mp3 player right before I bought my iPod, so I had been using them till today.
Ear buds are new to me. Up until a few weeks ago I had been using some old 1989 Sony headphones that came with my CD walkman! They were the type that had the "headband" and the "buds" were attached to the band... similar to the image from this link:
http://www.sears.com/data/product_images/electronics/thumbnail/05793135000-tv.jpg
So, the iPod buds sound amazing to me. They are significantly lighter and more comfortable than the ones I had been using.
I'd like to eventually look into getting some of those that I've seen suggested in this and other threads, but for now, these are great.
Honestly, I hadn't opened them until today because of the cool foil packaging. They were just so pretty in the package! I felt that way about the entire packaging job on the iPod. Man - the attention to detail!
And - I spent about 15 minutes trying to figure out what the deal was with the clip on the back of the remote. I thought it was volume control, or by pressing it changed the way the buttons work on the front. Man I need to stop trying to over-think everything!

Good choice.
I was considering getting the er4p/s because they had such great isolation and soundquality, but I could never tell because in less than two minutes they gave me a horrid headache.
How have you come to choose the hd280s? They are pretty good headphones, but not even in the same price range.
So I can say goodbye to cheap earphones forever
Goodbye to cheap earphones, hello to spending more and more money on headphones (better source, amp, and headphones ect)

I recenty started using the stock buds cause they sound pretty decent to me. At school i want to just be able to throw my ear buds and go. Not mess around with cords or remotes or anything so a bare ipod with stock headphones works just fine for me.
**update** by the way i also bought the same ear buds the guy above me ^^^ has and i dont like them at all. I prefer the apple buds over them any day

I also like my stock buds, they fit me better than anything i've tried before (Senn. MX300, some MD stock buds, my dad CD wlakman stock buds).
Think the sound quality is good too.

hehe that's funny ;)
most people disagree with my choice of the Sony mdr-7509, but they are a great travel companion for the iPod, unlike the hd650 and others which are open and require an amp.

I own quite a collection of headphones from in-ear, on the ear, over the ear, etc... here's my experiences.
I still have my old $3000 Sony unit (purchased used at $1200)from over 10 years ago (came in a James Bond type aluminum case) and I love them, however it's very impractical to use daily (due to the size, weight and lack of air circulation) that I have several other pairs for recreational use. Overall, I couldn't distinguish the audio quality between my Sony and the Sen Orpheus (yes, there's an audio shop that has that product on display here, which is also where I bought my Sony's a long time ago).
What I have now (but not for long) are the Bose Triports... not because of the sound quality (IMO, it's mediocre overall, but...) because of the comfort. I sincerely hate Sennheiser's product line's appearance and fit... they start to hurt after 1 hours worth of listening. To be absolutely fair, I have not tried any of their products for 2004, but I bought and sold over 8 units ranging from $120~$500 for 2003 and they all suck for comfort. I don't care how good they sound because I like to listen to music at least 2 hours at a time. Sound is good though, but I'm not impressed.
The Bose Triports IMO are overpriced (they compare to headsets that are around the 70~80 dollar range), but like Gucci shoes and Louis V. bags, the cost of brand recognition is high... but like many of us, I had to try them, after all, it's a Bose. I was shocked at the comfort... as cheap as they look, it was way better than anything I've tried from any company, it's super light and it does make anything vocal or symphonic sound nice... however if you play R&B, Pop, Techno, Dance or anything with a half descent amount of kick for bass (which encompasses the majority of music), this isn't for you. Audio quality is like a 5 out of 10. The Triport design puts extra emphasis in bringing out the spaciousness of classical music which sounds nice, but weird for other forms of music. My guess is if you're an old fart, this is the headsets for you. Bose sells the notion to their customers that the patented Triport design provides a richer sound and bass from smaller, lighter drivers making for good sound and a very comfortable unit. They satisfied only 1 out of their 2 goals. IMHO, they needed to produce a product line that can be afforded by the masses, but needed to engineer a design to make a cheap sounding headset, less cheap sounding through the use of the pinhole ports. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Bose products in general... I just don't like these Triports.
I'm a little disappointed with the choices today... 10 years ago, I had a very hard time deciding which one to buy because a lot of them did sound very good, were comfortable and looked very well made. Now there's a couple of ultra-cheap models, a lot of middle of the pack products that look horrible, sound "artificial" and have focused in the wrong areas for achieving a nice fit for comfort for extended use (> 1 hr.) and make a super expensive model only rap stars and drug dealers can afford.

I use the headphones that came with the iPod. Why not? They were included in the purchase price. I could use some expensive DJ headphones that I have, but I would rather not walk around with huge headphones on my head. The Apple ones work fine. I'm definitely not an "audiophile" here.

Nope, using the Etymotic ER?4P - for me the Ipod and these make amazing sound - the Ipod's earbuds don't compare.
yea i use the earbuds, i think they are pretty cool.
i dont understand why so many people complain about how much they suck.
they sound pretty good to me.
i guess im just not that picky. :D
For now, I use the iPod Earbuds with Slicsound plugs attached -- a major improvement for minimal investment ($10.95US).

I do still use the ear buds but the only reason i do is that i haven't raised the funds for a pair of new ones i'm thinking of some sony MDR Ex71s, they seem pretty decent for the price. I found witht eh ear buds that when i had the EQ on some bassy tracks, there was an unfortunate amount of distortion. As soon as EQ was off all was fine, but would like to use the EQ. The shures look nice but too pricey for a poor student.

Crap no!
The sound quality from the supplied buds is shocking!
I strongly advise anyone interested in upgrading to consider some Sennheiser PX200's.
They're small, lightweight, foldable and the sound quality rivals some products in the -$100 price range.

Still use 'em. Don't see why people would hate them so much apart from either having them fit or just a distaste for earbuds in general.
Besides, if I wanted "real" high-end sound, I'd get "real" high-end headphones, and not screw around with small stuff. Better yet, I'll just carry my home theater around with me -- it sounds good when it's got the iPod plugged into it in my apartment.

I HATE APPLE HEADPHONES
what is with the hundred dollar ear phones? tiny little pices of plastic that people get so worked up about. and all the stupid letters and numbers: Sony MDR V-150, shure E3, MDR EX71S, MDR J10, etc. Its all GREEK to me. I switch between the big blue ones by Sony ($15) and the white apple earbuds. if i wear the white ones for a long time, they start to stretch my ears because they're so big, and if i accidentally fall asleep with the blue ones, they push in and hurt my brain. but switching between them works fine for my purposes.
I'm just not an audiophile. (yet)
