View Full Version : Dension IceLinkPlus - soundquality troubles

I've just installed the Dension IceLinkPlus in my audi A4 avant quattro TDI. It has a audi Concert headunit with 6-cd player which isn't used now due to the iPod interface.
I'm quite happy about the quality when the engine isn't running, but as soon as it is, you can hear a kind of wine through the speakers which goes the same as the engine revs. Very irritating! What can be done to solve this?

The quality of the Dension stuff looks quite good, but the lenght of cable is quite short... (if you decide to place your iPod -out of sight- under the armrest)

This is something I hear from several Dension Icelink owners.
Apears to be linked with emi from the alternator.

Dension is aware of that so perhaps you should contact their customer support.

I had exaclty the same problem, I was that unhappy with the unit I asked the website I bought it from if I could have a refund, and I was glad when they accepted.

Try running the loose cable (bare the end first) from the unit to the headunit or a some bare metal behind your headunit. The cable is a earth cable and may fix the problem. Thats what I was going to try if I couldnt get my money back.

Let me know how you get on

That is rather a worry as I have booked my car in to have the ice link plus installed next week. has the fix suggested by "winker" worked?

I did connect the black wire to headunit chassis, but that's an requirement. It's sounds the same as an old car radio without extra filter. (you hear the alternator buzzing through your music)

I bought my interface at the official audi dealer, they're defenitely not experienced in these things since I had to explain to them how things work...

I'll try to contact the importer here in The Netherlands.

Have you solved the problem, what does the dealer say. see my posts ref BMW and Ipod.
What a mess this all is

The importer told me to go to the audi dealer, but the audi dealer doesn't understand sh*t about these interfaces. I fact: I had to help them ordering the right stuff.
The importer only suggested that it probably would be an earth problem...

So I'll make an extra earth wire from the headunit chassis to the car and hope to solve it.(I highly doubt it...)

If this doesn't tackle the problem I'll try a filter in the switched and parmanent plus.

EMI = Electro-Magnetic Interference.

My IceLink for my Honda Accord developed a similar problem after about a month and turned out to be defective. I replaced mine and it's been fine for almost a year now.

It sounds like yours started the instant you installed it--so it's less likely to be a defect.

I've also heard that a Ground-Loop Isolator can fix this sort of problem. This will require some soldering to get it installed.

A side note--the Ground-Loop Isolator fixes this sort of whine in other products too. I've heard of CD changers and Satellite Radio units (handheld units) that are hooked up to the head unit can have this problem.

If EMI is causing the interference, the Ground-Loop Isolator might not fix the problem.

I won't attempt to repeat the technical explanation of what causes the ground-loop and whining (since it's clearly a hardware problem and I deal strictly with software). If you're really curious, do a search for ground loop isolators.

Thank you very much for your reply! This was the kind of answer I was hoping for, now let's see if I can tackle the problem now.

I have the exact same problem in my Audi A3 with Concert Stereo.

Have you made any progress on this situation mate? I really hope it's possible to overcome.

Can anyone keep me posted, and I will also report back on any progress - thanks all! :)

I pi55ed the importer and the salesman, which was good for my own health...
... but I solved it finally. The alternator doesn't have a noise filter, so therefore I placed a line noise filter directly before the HU. I bought the Pioneer RD-984 and barely hear the irritating noise anymore. (altough is still is there...)

This line filter is 4 times cheaper than the cheapest ground loop isolator. All in all, it is a quite expensive solution for listening to music... A standard MP3 HU player would have done it for a third of this total price.

Just about to take the plunge and purchase the Dension iceLink Plus for my Audi A3 (with Concert audio). Reading this thread with great interest. Have any of the owners having line audio noise/buzzing problems found a solution? Some of these posts look a little old, so I'm hoping someone out there has made progress on this front?

What about, specifically, any of the A3 or other Audi owners having problems?

I Googled for the Pioneer RD-984 line noise filter, but it appears to be a UK device. Anything like this I should look for the US and hand to my installer *prior* to him doing the installation?

FYI, I'm having Dension do the install.

Thanks all,
D
