My 1st Generation 5GB iPod is not showing up in My Computer when I plug it in. I get the Apple logo first then it goes right to "ok to disconnect". In 3 years it hasn't had any problems. Anyone have any ideas?

first of all please sat 5GB not 5g or it will confuse others. check to see if the firewire card is reading it. and not just giving it power.

I had the same problem with my 4G. Firewire stopped seeing the ipod but was able to charge it. I bought a USB 2 cable and Windows reported it as an "unknown USB device" Somehow I came up with this--- I'm not sure how or why it worked but it did. Here are the steps I used if it helps anyone:

1. Reset charged iPod while not connected to machine.
2. Put the iPod in Disk Mode.
3. Connected it to the USB 2 port
4. Windows saw it but itunes said it needed to be restored and could not see any of my music.
5. Installed Anapod
6. Anapod saw the iPod, and corrupted music files.
7. Using Anapod's Manager Options (right click on tray)/ ipod devices/Recover Missing Tracks, the music was quickly restored and itunes was able to see the whole library
8.Using Copypod, I transferred all the music on the ipod to my computer.
9. Restored the ipod with the latest update utility
10. Transferred my music back to the ipod

It's working now. I went into the Event Viewer and found this error related to the Removable Storage Service "RSM could not load media in drive Drive 0 of library Apple Computer_ Inc. iPod IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device." I went to control panel>adminstrative tools>services and manually started the Logical Disk Manager, Logical Disk Manager Administrator Service and the Removable Storage Service. When I plugged in the iPod it showed up in Windows. I ran the iPod updater and everything is working fine now. I hope this helps anyone that has a similar problem.
