iTunes: iPod problem with software?

Whenever I try to put files on my iPod, I get something like this: (iTunes 6, iPod Updater is the newest but not yet installed on my iPod cause when I try to install it I get "iPod service error")

The Software required for communicating with your iPod does not exist, please reinstall iTunes...

What is the best thing to do here? Reinstalling iTunes doesn't do a thing.
