Hi! I use Linux too ( : If you tried to install Linux on your nano w/out the help of a trusty book, GO GET THIS BOOK AT YOUR BOOKSTORE. "Ipod & iTunes Hacks" by O'Reilly. It has instructions in there, step by step, on how to put Linux on your iPod the right way. Unfortunately the book is a lot of cashola, BUT, you can bring a pencil & paper to the bookstore and copy everything the book says down. The book will be found in the Computers/Software/Tech section of books at Borders.
P.S. Do you really want Linux on your nano? Because you don't have to put Linux on your nano. You can have your nano work on your Linux computer! You can EVEN...get iTunes to work on Linux! To figure out how to do various things w/ your nano on Linux, go up to the top of this page, click Software on the orange toolbar, and select Linux.
P.P.S. If you want to see what the book looks like and peek inside, search iPod & iTunes hacks in Google book search. I hope I was some help! Books can save the day!
P.P.S. If your nano is so broken you can't fix it AT ALL, go to ipodmods.com. They fix iPods, and you can sell them your iPod, even if it's broken, and get money (various amounts depending on how your iPod functions)

Sorry, I should have read your post more carefully! You can either use the book to install Linux properly or do what you want, change it back to Apple. I don't know how to change it back to Apple but my dad will absolutely, positively, and definately know what that Linux message means! Because he is the Linux nerd ( : So have no fear! He will come help you! He will tell you what that message means!
As soon as he wakes up...and I'll go wake him up now...
And he's not waking up!!! Grr. I'll get back to you later.

Searcher: The iPodLinux projects intentions were to add functionality to the iPod. To allow for more codecs and allow for users to write their own programs to be used on the iPod. As you have seen this has succeeded, when they first started on the orginal iPods no one used it or liked, after Podzilla was finalized (to a certain extent) many more GUIs were released, and functionality boomed.
PrimeMinister: The Nano isn't broken, however it seems like the kernel can't find what it wants. First of all, that "Matrix Text" is the kernel booting. A pid is a process ID, similar to the processes you find when you open up the processes tab in Task Manager. Linux numbers them as opposed to naming them. I think PID 33 is for recording capabilities, I think recording is not yet supported for the Nano's so it makes sense if it fails. If it says command Podzilla and doesn't actually start it after a few seconds (wait a bit more though) then there's a problem with Podzilla and maybe there is a Podzilla in your $PATH but it's not a binary. Try looking into that.

If the book is hard to find in the UK and u can't i-shop...well, I feel bad for you. Try searching online for a book like that, I guess, and try to find it at the bookstore.

Can't he just use iPod updater and restore it?

That would remove iPod Linux from the iPod, I think he wants Linux but it won't work.

Here's the iPod Linux Project's page:
http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page
You might be able to find instructions on how to properly install Linux. I think they may have forums so you can ask there as well.
Also for those who don't know, with Linux on the Nano, you can also watch videos.
If you mess up, you can simply run the updater for your iPod to restore it.

Not quite as simple as that. The process of installing linux on a nano is a bit complicated. Deleting and forming drive partitions, and once you get into that you have to reformat your ipod completely (not just using the updater) but there are some good forums on installing linux on the ipod nano.
