help with disconnecting

whenever my iPod is plugged into the computer, it always says "do not disconnect." even when iTunes is not open. I just want to charge it, I'm not sure when its done charging, or if it even is charging.
any one know what's wrong?

There is a little icon to the left of your clock with a green arrow pointing to the left. click on this and it will say safetly remove usb storage device(or something like that) a few seconds later you will be able to remove your ipod.
