Urgent Help...Mac Ipod to PC

I have read several of the topics on this and for some reason I am just not getting, and actually I am in a bind and maybe trying too hard or too quickly.

I have a 4th gen Ipod, for MAC. I need to get to it using my pc. Is there anyway to do this free? Also, I DO NOT have my IPOD able to be used as a hard drive, so I can't even see it on my PC at this very moment and can't get to the MAC until next week.

XPLay (http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/) is the only way to do this, and it's not free.....!

my PC couldnt read a MAC formatted iPod untill i think either the latest version of iPod Updater or iTunes was installed.
