I think they're not too bad. There are definitely much better alternatives, and I would definitely recommend trying something at some point.

All in all, the stock earbuds are strictly mediocre. You're much better off using something else.

It all boils down to whether you like unbalanced or balanced headphones, though.

For what they are, I personally think they are pretty good. They are not what I would call hi-fi. If you can find someone who has the Sennheiser PX-200 or Grado SR60 or SR80, you'll be left with your jaw on the floor. The iPod can put out some pretty great audio.

A question of choice. Personally I think that the bass is over compensated with the stock ones. Depending what kind of music you are listening to, this could present a challenge.
I think that in the long run, you are better to upgrade.

I think they a pretty good for actually coming with the iPod, but I would not pay 40 bucks for a pair, I would add some extra money to that and get some better earphones that sound much better.

I can't hear anything using them unless the volume is like 80%.

You , my friend .... must have one horrible problem with tenitous !! :D

I've reverted back to the 'factory' iPod buds with the Griffin EarJams due to the cords on my Sony EX71's melting ( bad material for insulation IMO ) . I will say that once you use some better phones , the iPod buds sound horrible ! I only went back to 'stock' for their toughness and if I mess em up >> no big loss !!

Haha not me. Luckily, I already had my Shures so I didn't have to use the stock buds at all. I was curious to how they sounded. :)
