what's the difference besides aesthetics? any sound differences? i've been using ex51's for a year now and they're great... the cable seems a bit fragile though.

Nothing at all diffrence in sound quality, take a look at the Sony Style Website, they have the spec's compairing both model's they are exactly the same.
Only diffrences are:
The 71's have a much longer cord, which is in 2 pieces, so you can connect your Sony Remote without any hassle.
...and the design is slightly diffrent, as you may alreay know.
I used to have a pair of Black 71's which i used for my Sony Network Walkman. They where great, until i lost em :(
I brought a pair of White 51's last week to match my White iPod. I did'nt get the White 71's because of the cord lentgh, there way to long, and if you only use the top half, there to short, lol, the're only useful if you have an Remote IMO.

I like the ex51's for there cord length. i have a pair of shure e3g also and the cord length is a little bit to long.
the sound is almost exactly the same.. there the same but one has a different design
