I've posted a solution that I came up with for my wife's iPod on the apple forums. I'm not an established user here so it won't let me post urls here. If you cut and paste the url below you'll get to the post.

Just so everyone knows my wifes 4th Gen 40gb iPod was booting over and over and getting the folder exclamation icon each time. WinXP saw it as a removable disk but I couldn't access it and the guys at the Apple store couldn't get a Mac to see it either. So I did a bit of work and got hers working without opening it or shaking it around. If you have the time this may work for you. It will take awhile but it's worth it if it works. Wife's iPod is now working as good as the day she got it.
