I got tired of Itunes not seeing my iPod when windows does etc. The same thing would happen on my sons machine with his mini, thus forcing a reboot. iTunes is too quirky for me, and has way too much bloat. I tried Xplay, Ephpod, and Anapod over the past year and a half, but wasn't really thrilled by them either. Then I read a post by someone here about Yamipod and gave it a shot. It ROCKS! It's a single .exe file, (it's even freeware) It runs on any version of windows, and I used it on a 20gig 3rd gen, a mini and a nano (all on the same machine)and it worked flawlessly!!! Just drag-n-drop to/from the ipod. I only deal with or convert to MP3's (just short of 3000 songs now) and refuse to get stuck with Apples "protected files". I don't need podcast stuff nor RSS feeds for anything. I just want my friggin songs.
Yamipod's website said that you should use iTunes to install at least 1 song so the iPod is setup properly before using Yamipod. I took a brand new Nano straight out of the box, plugged it in and Yamipod did the rest. Itunes was never even installed on that machine. go yami....go yami....go yami...
