I would like to know the best way to play my new ipod in my car/home. Do I need two different accessories? I tried the itrip, and am unhappy with the quality of sound. Any suggestions?

Simple answer is yes. Do you plan to use the iPod at home through existing stereo system/powered speakers or are you looking for an all in one solution.
For the Car, what type of car do you have and does it still have the factory headunit installed. if not what is the brand and model number of the aftermarket headunit that is in your car.

For listening in the car, there are three basic methods... Direct Line-in to your stereo (best quality), cassette adaptor (medium quality - same as an audio cassette, basically), or FM transmitter (like the iTrip, you only get FM radio quality at best).
However, even among FM transmitters your mileage may vary. I'd suggest checking out our Fall 2005 FM Transmitter Shootout (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/comments/the-fall-2005-fm-transmitter-shootout/) for a good comparison of the various FM transmitter options available.
In addition, for home use, there are numerous speaker options available, and you can even connect the iPod dock itself to your home stereo system. Again, our Accessory Reviews (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/) should give you a pretty good idea of many of the options available.

I would like to listen through my exisiting stereo equipment. We have a good stereo system at home.
I don't know what a head unit is?!?! We have a 2003 chev. and 2004 GMC with the factory stereos in them. both are the better stereos.

For home use you could buy something as simple the cable that plug into your dock connector port on your iPod and then plug the L & R RCA cable into your stereo. If you want your iPod to charge while it's connected to yoru stereo a universal dock would easily combine those features.
For the car I will asume that you will be able to find an adapter to hardwire your iPod to your car stereo, but I can't say with 100% assurance without knowing exact models and doing some research.
