I recently purchased my 60gb iPod Photo on ebay (used). I’m using XP with SP2. I downloaded the ipod & itunes updates from the website. I wanted to dump the existing music to start over fresh with my own.
I struggled with this, as my computer wouldn’t recognize my iPod.
Finally, it did. It dumped the hard drive, and then directed me to disconnect the iPod, plug it into an external source to “flash” the hard drive (what’s this about?) Plug it back into the USB jack to finish.
I did all this & was successful, so I thought.
After loading 3gb of music, I disconnected the ipod to test it. When I wanted to load more music, I plugged the unit into my computer. Nothing. It didn’t recognize my unit. After trying several different things, I ended up reloading the ipod updater and clearing my ipod’s hard drive again. I started the process over, reloading all the music.
All was well until I disconnected it. Again when I connected, it didn’t recognize my ipod. The directions lead me back to a dump. There’s got to be a better way. Is this a windows problem or ipod problem?

How long did you wait before disconnecting? I've noticed that the video iPod takes a lot longer to recognize because Windows seems to be scanning all of the files Sometimes it takes a couple of minutes, but mine always works.
