well i bought my imac almost a year ago, (when the new genneration flat screens came out) and i have been adding adding to my song library since i bought it, espectially since i bought by prized possession my 10gb ipod. Now I not only load up my HD with music, but im also really big in digital photograpy so i have pictures and editing apps that take up space as well. My question is should i delete my my mp3 files ( is it possible to keep them loaded on my pod but not on my hard drive) or is it not even worth it because i have 29.44 gb left on my computer( i dont know how much space that is, but all i know is that there is an ipod out that is bigger then my computer hd lol.)
any ideas/ advice would be great=)

29.44 GB left is huge. I only have 23.8 MAXIMUM Capacity on myn, and only like 2 left. You don't have to worry about running out of space for a long time. Don't worry :)

I agree that you don't need to wrry about space, yet. You're doing fine.
Would still love to hear someone address his question, though: it is possible to delete all the music off the computer and keep it soley on the iPod? What are the disadvantages?
Of course, if you do this, you'd want a good CD or DVD backup -- the iPod seems like it could be volitale, given the moving parts and such...

You can keep music on your ipod without having it on your computer.
If you use the sync feature, you just need to tell your software to not delete files that aren't on the computer when syncing.
If you manually transfer your songs, then once you send them to the ipod, you can most definitley delete them from the computer.
The only thing you need to watch is that option within the syncing process. You can have it so that it just adds songs that aren't on the ipod that are on the computer. Normally, it'll also delete songs that are on the ipod, but not in the library. Just find that option in whatever software you're using.
Just one thing though. Using your ipod as the only source of music does come with a few drawbacks. When you send the files to the ipod, it alters the directory structure and file names, so if you wanted to keep the files in the folders that they're in on your computer, you may want to look into a different back up medium, (something like a DVDr or CDr).
Also, the ipod is just another harddrive, and I don't trust harddrives with data that I want to hold onto. If you are really careful about your data, it's a good idea to have it backed up anyways.
But to make a long story short (I suppose i've already gone and told the long story though). Yes, you can keep the songs on the ipod, and delete them from your computer.
And just a note, 30gigs is plenty of free space. Just to put it in proportion, most programs generally take up from 200-500 megs (0.2 to 0.5 gigs). So don't worry about space until you start getting down to 2-3 gigs left.
