hi there
is there a compatibility list for cards supporting the iPod or otherwise cards supported by the iPod :) ?
I'm not quite sure, but I think my Aten PF-103 isn't supported. I see the iPod but can't write anything on it and restoring didn't work either, I had to fire up my old machine with a built in pci-card...
since my digital live plays on my notebook now, I don't want to use the old desktop, so is there a way (except buying a new firewire card...) to get the things working? not really, eh...?

Go to this link on apple's site to answer your question.

Basically you have to search the microsoft site for a list of
Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) certified firewire cards or buy one from apple.
I took a brief look at the microsoft link and found that Adaptec cards and Belkin cards are suppose to be compatible.

Be careful about the WHQL list. While those cards are compatible w/Windows--they aren't always compatible w/the iPod.
Take the Belkin cards for instance. While most folks don't have a problem with them, there are a bit hit or miss. Folks used to have a lot more problems with them.
If you just want to be the safest, the cards I always recommend are the Adaptec 4300 (always works) and Orangelink cards from OrangeMicro. Usually VIA chipset based cards are good, but you're taking your chances.

@ashawley you sound good, but are there any pcmcia-cards around with adaptec chips? never heard of it, but would be nice to have adaptec all around you since my desktop is adaptec powered.

huh? whassupp?!? when connecting my iPod to my notebook (with the maybe incompatible firewire card?) iTunes fires up itself, the system lags for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and then iTunes sees my iPod, all the files and playlists (I created and transferred from the other computer using ephPod) and after, lets say 1 minute, all files have "!" and the drive becomes "unknown" (I don't know how to translate, I have a german windows...) and in the device manager windows says that there is no driver for this device (iPod) and it couldn't start it (Error code 10). is this because of an obviously non-compatible firewire card?
