I just purchased my Ipod 40gb for windows.

I connected it to my firewire card
Its charges but in the device properties I get the message
"This device cannot start (code 10)"
When I run the ipod manager program the program starts up and displays the Ipod Manager window but does not list any ipods and the program just exits (or disaapears and does not appaer to be active).
When I install this program on another win xp machine (but no firewire card), the program does not disappear but stays active.

Can anyone offer some advice.

I have reinstalled the software a number of times and also reset the ipod. I have used the software provided on the Ipod disc and also from musicmatch download page.
I have tried running musicmatch and Itunes but still I get no connection to the ipod.

But at least it is fully charged!

hi there,

i have the same problem with my 3rd gen 10g ipod. I just had windows xp installed along with a new firewire port, and the computer is running smoothly. The computer recognizes that a "mass usb storage device" is plugged in, but it won't appear in my itunes and i can't reformat it with the disk. have you had any luck with yours, or had any useful replies? if so, please let me know what's going on!

thanks so much,
sara

I replaced the firewire card in my PC and bingo, everything worked fine.

Check the IPOD website for compatible cards and then check what you have.

Even though my firewire card worked fine for other hardware connections, like my video camera and external harddrive connections it did not seem to be compatible with my ipod.

I cant remember what the makes were and are but that is what I did to fix the problem.

thanks for the input. i will go check the firewire serial number and see if it's compatible or not.

here's another question. do i need to use firewire or will a usb connection work? right now i'm using a usb/firewire split cord, and plugging the ipod into my outlet and the computer at the same time (firewire to outlet, usb to computer) and that is the only way i could get the computer to know that the ipod was working at all. should i be using the firewire instead of the usb, and not have it plugged in to the outlet at all?

thanks so much!

sara, you're using the USB/Firewire combo card correctly. The firewire portion is there to power the iPod. Without it you'd have to rely on the iPod's battery to upload/sync.

If you do intend to use just firewire at some point, just use the firewire cord that came w/the iPod (not the combo cord).

glad to know that i'm at least using the firewire/usb cord correctly and that my ipod isn't going to explode!

now the question remains as to what to do with the ipod itself. the computer is happy and running nicely, but my ipod is frozen between the "ok to disconnect," "do not disconnect," "low battery," and the infamous "!folder icon" that everyone dreads. I've tried the toggle hold press inside/outside buttons thing to no avail. Since the computer doesn't recognize the ipod (it knows that there is a mass usb device attached, but the ipod itself won't register, i've tried the disk manager thing) i can't reformatt it via computer. is there any other way to reformatt it, or do i need to send it back to apple?

thanks!
