when i eject my pod from my computer, the 'do not disconnect' warning stays on. the pod is definitely not connected, but the ok to disconnect message doesn't come on. what in the world is going on? might this be a firmware issue? is it even an issue at all? i know it's not safe to unhook the pod until it's ready, but is it actually ready and just not realizing it?

open up task manager. Go to processes. Look for a task called "flashksk.exe" End it.
If it was there, it would have been the source of all your problems. It's part of a smart media card reader driver, and although it's usage is unknown, it's recomended to not delete it. Just end task after every time you reboot.

Until I went into the settings on iTunes for the iPod, and made sure the "Enable FireWire disk use" was turned off. Then it worked fine afterwards, not sure why.

Same here :(
i just got a new 40gb ipod.Computer recognized it while installing MMJB and it was going through the 2.1 software installation. Then i noticed the ipod just stopped responding and i get that same "DO NOT DISCONNECT" message.
All this happened straight out of the box.And its still like that after about 3hrs.
Ive already tried all the stuff that the manual says to do if it stops responding.I"ve even uninstalled/reinstalled ....No Luck :(
Any help will be appreciated

Hi
I just fixed it.Seems like its working fine.
Try these steps, the first one worked for me.
Try these quick fixes first:
Check the iPod Hold Switch
If your iPod will not turn on, check the hold switch position. The hold switch disables the controls on the front. To begin using iPod, slide the "Hold" switch away from the headphone jack.
Power Your iPod
If your iPod is unresponsive, it may not be charged. Plug the iPod in, wait for a moment, then turn the power on by pushing any button and check the screen.
Reset Your iPod
If the iPod is not responding and appears to be frozen: Connect iPod to its power supply, toggle the Hold switch on and off, and press the "Play/Pause" and "Menu" buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, then release them. If you continue to hold down the reset buttons the iPod will display a low battery icon and must be connected to power before it will work again.
Let the iPod Battery Drain
In extremely rare cases the iPod might get into a state in which it needs to be drained completely before it can be reset. If the above steps did not resolve the issue, disconnect the iPod from any power source and leave it disconnected for approximately 24 hours. After this period connect it to power and reset.
Update iPod Software

none of that works for me. my ipod is charged fine, teh bar is on full and its been charged for the time it should of been.
i dont see why i should let the battery drain as ive only just bought th thing. could it be caused by some program accessing the ipod when i dont want it to?

When your iPod is connected to your mac, and iTunes is running, there should be, on the bottom left hand corner of iTunes, four icons. The far right one is "Eject iPod", the next one to the left is "Turn Visual Effects on or off", the one to the left of that is "Open the Equalizer window", and then the one to the left of that is "Display options for player".
Click on "Display options for player". Near the bottom inside that menu are three options that you can check on or off. Make sure "Enable FireWire disk use" is not selected.
If you don't have that option, then maybe you don't have the latest version of the iTunes and/or iPod software.

i dont have that option because i have the "manually manages songs and playlists" option ticked rather than automatic.
which means its greyed out
i do have the latest sofware. and im on a pc by the wya not a mac
