Deleting songs from itunes, keeping on ipod

My hard drive is filling up fast from all the songs on my itunes. I want to delete them from itunes, but keep them on my ipod. Can I set my preferences so that when I plug in my ipod, it only updates NEW songs that have been ADDED, but does not delete songs that have been deleted??

Also, how can I change my preferences to manually manange the ipod. When I try to change the prefs it says "ipod not connected". When I connect it, it automatically starts synchronizing.

2. while it's synchronising, right click on the iPod iCon, then go to iPod options. You should find "manually manage songs and playlist" in there
