View Full Version : Teachers with iPods
Many teachers at my school have iPods most of them have minis. Last week my geometry teacher gave me an A on a test just because I installed iPodlinux on his 4G 20 GB pod. Took me 10 minutes doing that while people spent 2 hours doin the test. hehehe

My Computer Science teacher is one of the few at my school that uses an iPod. Then again, I live in a suburbanite town where the teachers are typically less tech-oriented. He's also a bassist in a hardcore band and dons a mohawk and teachers comp sci, so that might have made a difference :)

If you can have sex with your teacher and get an A, why can't you do it with the power of Linux!

I'm a lecturer and I own an Ipod. Nothing really surprising there given that teachers, and lecturers are just like everyone else. We listen to music, and like technology

if my students saw my ipod, they would probably follow me out the door and take it.
maybe your teachers feel the same way?

Well, my wife is a music teacher, and she has an iPod. I also bought her a spare set of iPod speakers (Altec Lansing IM3's) to take to school so that she can play stuff for the class from her iPod when she needs to (she used to ask me to burn CDs to take to class until I explained that almost everything she's ever asked me to burn is also on her iPod and she can just play it from there).
In fact, the speakers have become popular with some of her students, since many of them have iPods, and have asked to use them several times for presentations.
She's even hooked her iPod up to the TV a couple of times to show some video clips to the class, since there was one day when she wanted to show a Remembrance Day video clip and the DVD player wasn't working. Fortunately, she had it on her iPod and I had sent her with the video cable and instructions on how to do this just in case.
The most interesting thing is that she's not really a technology enthusiast, but rather just a typical end-user who is starting to see the usefulness of this and figure out how to use it, with my help and guidance.

I think it's a great learning supplement (the iPod) and I'm sure it makes your wife's teaching experience, as well as her students' learning experience a lot more interesting and varied. :) Well done on getting her a great gift!

my geo teacher had an ipod i think 3rd g. Then around the 2nd quarter, someone stole it from her desk. She hasn't found the thief and she says that she'll won't buy another one. It was pretty funny though, people were talking about it and they knew who stole it. but not funny that her ipod got stolen. though, i don't like her, i bet she had bad taste in music.
overall, i'm glad someone stole her ipod because she always put oldie, queer music on in class. it was so irritating, i swear, she put on the same song for like a week. but, i'm not glad that she lost her ipod.

We just gave our music teachers iPod nanos from our concert.
A couple days later, we saw one of them reading through the manual going "iTunes? Aha!". It was awesome.
Well anyway, last year, my history and Spanish teachers had iPods (one's a pink iPod mini and a hardcore Mac user, respectively).
But this year, I haven't seen any.

There's even a trend going around college campuses where teachers record their lectures, upload them on the internet, and students can download them and put them on their iPod. This is still in the beginning phases, but it seems to work nicely where it is in place. It'd be a really handy study tool for finals week.

Only teacher I know of that has an ipod is my dance teacher, and I only knew about it when she wanted to show some dance song to another student. However my math teacher always enjoys taking away ipods from people listening instead of working........

That's awesome. But they would need some way to make sure the kids actually go to class.

I agree with that! I learn much better hearing than reading the lectures so that would be great help

at my school, most teachers are very particular about students with ipods out during class. with some of my teachers the rule is if it's out, it's gone ( for the day at least).
however, i've had 2 teachers that have threatened people with taking them and selling them on Ebay.
really, i think it's because they want them for themselves :P

I would find it amusing if one of my students were to attempt to actually take my IPod away from me. That being said, I actually use my various generations of personal music devices to teach a lesson on progression of technology over the years.

I have a 60Gb 5G iPod running Rockbox. I am a math teacher.
I have helped students install Rockbox on iPods and iRivers, and taught them how to use better rippers than iTunes :)

Yeah. My friend was having trouble with his iPod Nano, how it froze and wouldn't respond. My old, 60-ish teacher went up to him and told him to hold Menu and Select for 6 seconds..and seeing as she was pretty old, it was kinda weird how she knew about this. Apparently, she has a pink 4GB Mini.
Another story, I let this hot girl in class borrow my pencil, and I didn't have one, so I traded my iPod for a pencil as collateral for my teacher, and then while it was in her possession, she actually turned it on and started going through my songs...

Most teachers I know don't go out and advertise "I HAVE AN iPOD" (how exactly do you type that in all capitals?) but I know they do.
The band instructor has one, and is known to have one, but after so many years, I'm at a friends level with him. We spend hours talking about anything... and are usually trying to switch people to Mac.
The other high school music teacher (vocal ensembles and theory/history/theatre), who I'm at a friends level with, asked me the other day about getting an iPod for class... and she's 3099 years old. We have so many age jokes with her... look her up, her SS number is 0000-00-001.

I know news flash adults listen to music !. To begin with I'm sure it would have been mostly adults that use them ! that is before they became fashionable...
One of my Computing lecturers in college has an iPod 3G 15GB and finds it great - he's had it since it came out. But apart from him all other lecturers(and students) hate Apple. it must be because it's a Computer maintainance course but they all always majorly bashed apple.
