okay..still have the vers. 1.1 macipod...wanting to convert it to winIpod so i can use itunes for windows....i can access the f: drive...which is the ipod drive...but it says that the drive is unformatted...and asks if i would like to format the drive....what does this do...is this the answer to my problem...or a terrible fate that could destroy my ipod completely?....thanks

Your Mac iPod is formated using the HFS+ file system, which cannot be read by a Windows machine (unless you use a third party software such as MacOpener).

If you download the "iPod for Windows Software 1.3 Updater" located here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120236 it will format your Mac iPod to a Windows iPod (the fat32 file system). This will erase EVERYTHING on your iPod and make it readable to windows (and mac - mac's can read fat32 without 3rd party software). Then, download iTunes for the PC and be happy.

two more questions and i think i've got it...i've downloaded the updater...when i run it...it asks to locate firmware file...i don't have one i believe...a little help on that subject

and second of all...i've got the ipod connected...and i run the updater...when i click the f: drive (which is the ipod's drive)...it asks to format it....do i need that to clear the ipod or is that just completely pointless?

thanks

okay if i do the whole menu+play/pause button restore how much does that actually erase...to what condition does it leave it....does it just clear everything (absolutely everything!) off the ipod....and from there do i use the updater?

I'm at a loss because it never prompted me for firmware.

When it asks to format it, do it. it will wipe it clean for you. Wiping it clean would be pointless before running the updater.
