I have a 15GB 3rd Gen IPOD and everything worked okay (please note that I am not saying fine or great ). I was able to sync it with MC9 and my PC recognized it.
But suddenly, when I docked it in it didn?t show up in XP or MC9 anymore. Since I had connected it to a firewire plug at the front of my PC I switched to another plug on the back of my PC and it worked again. So far so good. Now I have the same problem again, but neither of the 2 firewire plugs is working. The IPOD still charges itself, but I can?t see it in either my Device Manager or MC9.
Does anybody know what the problem is?

I had a similar problem, here's what Apple support told me to do.
1. With iPod in dock, press middle two buttons and hold, it should reboot.
2. As soon as you see the black apple, press outer two buttons and hold, this should put the iPod in "disk mode". It should now be recognizable in Windows.
3. If does show up in My Computer, then go ahead and run restore, then update (from the 2.1 updater).
4. VERY IMPORTANT!!! If the restore function seems to hang at the very end (the progress bar gets to amost the end and just stops), just hit the middle two buttons and hold them again until the iPod reboots. At this point you should get the black apple along with a progress bar on the iPod. When this is done, the Updater window in Windows should say okay to disconnect at that point.
5. MOST IMPORTANT THING I HAVE LEARNED ABOUT USING THE iPod WITH WINDOWS!!! Always wait just a little bit longer- it takes WinXP and the iPod a lot longer than other devices I have used to negotiate and decide that they are both done communicating with each other and that it's okay to remove the iPod from the system.
Good luck.

Jonathan, I can?t thank you enough!!!
Your advise has worked out and MC9 and my PC recognize the IPOD again. I can synch again without any problems.
Thanks so much for your help.

Hey, np! I actually had to take my four-day old iPod back to the Apple store in Palo Alto, CA where I bought it for an exchange because I blew away the harddrive in it by taking it out of the dock when it said it was okay to, but Windows was still accessing it. Luckily for you you're back in business!
Good job,
Jonathan

the only small thing is that the ipod manager won?t recognize my ipod, but as long as my pc does and i can sync with mc9 i am happy.

Hmm I have the same "Ipod manager does not reconise" thing but I cann access the drive.
Any ideas why and whats the best course of action to get Ipod manager to recognise the ipod?

Sorry, but I've never used iPod Manager, so I don't know. I was just worried about it syncing with iTunes and Anapod. Are you saying that you can't move music to your iPod?
