For iTunes and therefore iPod support, you absolutely need a bare minimum of Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP SP2. Nothing personal of course, but just ditch crappy Windows 98 and upgrade to the stability and power of XP (or even 2000, compared to 98).

Because you insist on using Firewire, which is in fact incompatible with all new iPods now, I'm guessing you're using an old computer with slower USB 1.1 ports. You can get a Firewire card for dirt cheap, though: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815165002

In the course of owning your iPod, you shouldn't need to buy any more software, or any money at all except for accessories and music/video downloads.

iTunes doesn't work under Windows 98, but Winamp (and others) do. For Winamp you'll need ml_ipod plugin and an USB driver from http://www.98-drivers.com/ipod.html or firewire card for about $15.
Winamp support for iPod is very good, there is even a discussion forum.
More info on USB driver webpage.

You can use ipod with win98se and usb1.

You can't use itunes.

There are several programs that will work if you only want to do music. I used Realplayer. I haven't tried winamp.

If you want to do audio books from the pay services forget it. (I think) they have all limited their service to itunes & therefore win2000/xp. Free audio books (of varying quality) are usually in mp3 format and therefore you can use the other free programs such as realplayer...

anything else you need?

ipods aren't compatible with windows 98, but you can use an ipod through the USB though.

Hmm. No. iPod is ok with win98se. It's Itunes that can't work with win98se.

Yes you can use iPod through usb 1.1 and 2. It's just slower through 1.1.
