Hi folks- I have 5th Gen pod but only have Win 98 OS. For boring reasons it's tough for me to upgrade to 2000 or XP. Have followed the threads on this but am confused. Assumimg I can plug pod into an 2000 or XP PC elsewhere to start with what exactly do I need to do to my home PC running 98 to get it work there? Could really use some simple help on this one.

The preferred solution is to install 2000 or XP anyway which is so much better than 98 in virtually every way, even on old hardware.
If you have access to a 2000 or XP machine, you will need to install iTunes on it and add your library to it (or share it on the network then add it to iTunes, if that's the only solution).
There are Windows 98 solutions but the only officially supported one is iTunes 6, and that requires 2000 SP4 or XP SP2.
Why do you not want to upgrade, or why can you not upgrade?

Yes, u get a friend with XP start it for you. Configure the iPOD and get it ready. Configure it for direct access (disc mode). From then on, you load the necessary tools in your W98 machine and u basically threat the iPOD as a storage device. U drag the songs from your W98 machine to the iPOD disc. Am sure I am skipping lots of steps here.
Does that helps?

That will not work. Simply adding MP3s to the disk does not register them with the iPod's internal database.

I tried getting songs off my old WIN 98 machine, with a program that doesnt exist anynmore, for various Apple legal reasons. But had no luck, the process is very slow, arduous, and almost fried my PC for good. It seems as though WIN 98 machines are not supported much anymore, just install 2000 or XP, that is your best bet. Sorry to tell you.
