I placed my iPod into my JBL OnStage II dock this evening, and it would not detect the iPod. I got a message that said the iPod was new and needed formatting (considering I had over 7G out of 20G on there, this was news to me).

I ran the disk that came with my iPod, and got an installation error. I downloaded the latest software updater from Apple. I ran it, and it only gave me the Restore option (wouldn't allow the Update and keep all info on the iPod). I was miffed, but thought, well, I can download the music again, no big. I clicked Restore, it re-formatted, then gave me a message to disconnect from PC and plug into an external power source for firmware reflash. I disconnected it using the safely remove hardware feature on WinXP Pro's system tray, and then plugged it into the wall adapter. I clicked on Menu, the silver apple logo against the black background came up and... nothing. All I see is a folder with an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle, then it shuts down.

I am at a loss. This thing is only a couple months old, is the 4th gen 20G iPod color model, and I lost everything that was on it. I am not sure what to do. The original disk that came with the thing won't work, and neither does the latest update from Apple.

I guess it's a good thing I purchased the extended warranty from the retailer... PLEASE, someone out there, tell me there is a way to get my iPod up and running again. THANK YOU!

I wanted to thank ALL the helpful people here at the iPod Lounge (note extreme sarcasm). It's not like I posted something without clarification, or even without looking at the FAQs. If everyone was stumped, at least admit it. Thanks again.
