Help would be greatly appreciated. Recently when I've plugged my ipod into my USB port, it is not reading as an ipod. Everything freezes up for a while, then it is shown on My Computer as a removeable disc, but not on itunes as an ipod. I have tried reinstalling itunes and I cannot update the ipod as it is not recognising an ipod being connected when I go through the process. I can't figure it out at all. Anybody who can help me with this will be my hero forever!!

Have you tried the actual iPod Updater application to restore it?

First try a reset by pressing & holding the menu + center buttons (3G menu + play). If it doesn't help then restore the iPod but make sure your library is on your computer since this will erase the iPod contents.

By ipod updater do you mean downloading the update from the Apple website and then opening itunes? Because if so I've tried both to no avail. Resetting the ipod itself has no effect and Itunes simply does not recognise that there is an ipod connected, so it says there is nothing to update! Any other ideas?

Download the iPod updater from the Apple website. Or use the CD that came with your iPod. Open the updater and click on RESTORE.

you have to format it if it says its unformatted, because it won't be able to read it. Are you and your firend on 2 separate platforms?

My ipod developed this problem after functioning correctly for just under a year. The computer recognises it as a removeable drive, or fleetingly as an ipod, and I even had the folder exclamation mark message on the ipod screen at one point.

I can't restore as the updater doesn't see that the ipod is plugged in. Nor does my original Apple CD.

I am sending it back to Apple for repair - hoping that it is the internal interface card at fault (the problem has been seen on two separate computers, so I don't think it is my windows set up at fault here) and will lose the (non backed up) contents.

I only hope that it will come back able to interface with my computer like in the old days.

Hello.

I am having the exact same problem with a brand new replacement IPOD. It first appeared two weeks after I received it. I hardly ever connect it to my computer to update it, and when I did, the problem occured. As you say, it does not seem to mount it. With lock-ups and slow-downs it eventually recognizes it as an APPLE IPOD USB DEVICE but does not mount it and the drive is clearly not accessible.

I was able to work something out by connecting it to a MAC and having it detected and formated as a MAC IPOD (but even there, it only half-detected it). When I re-connected it to my PC it finally gave me the opportunity to RESTORE it. So I did. And it worked fine for 2 weeks.

Today, after not having updated it in 10 days or so, I am facing the same problem. I feel I need to restore it again. But no. I will send it back to Apple. I firmly believe their latest update is causing this problem.

Just to update:

I reported the problem to Apple, and as the Ipod still had a month's warranty (and I'm glad they didn't ask for proof of purchase as I won it in a competition and didn't have any!) they took it back via UPS to Holland and sent me a replacement ipod within 10 days.

I am left wondering if the software update wasn't at fault too, as nothing else had been changed (although I suppose I'm not au fait with everything that Microsoft update changes automatically on XP either..

Anyway, problem solved, just hope it doesn't happen again once I'm out of warranty (which has been extended to 90 days as of receipt of replacement ipod)....

Fingers crossed.

Exact same prob here too. In the end all I could do was exchange it under warranty. Went round and round with HP and their service line on several different attempts to fix. Reintsalled Updater...ITunes...Finally my Ipod locked up and got a frowny face.

One of the help desk people told me it was because I wasn't using a powered 2.0 usb port. When ever I questioned here further about this she kind of got mad and said that I was just out to argue. I said I just wanted to understand because what she was telling me made no sense. And I had never read/heard about this as a problem. Called back later to another rep who said it was just best to replace it. Using replacement on a new laptop now and no problems.

I'm having the same problem but it is USB 2.0 specific. If I plug into a USB 1.1 port the iPod is displayed as an iPod with full view of all files and folders. If I plug into a USB 2.0 port it behaves just as described by the primary thread message here.

In reference to my post immediately before this one. The USB2.0 port that I am using IS powered. The first clue is that the iPod charges when attached to that USB2.0 port. I don't think a passive port would charge the battery on the iPod.

Try looking here. This worked well for me and my wife's iPod is back to working like it should. You'll have to put the http and // in it since I'm not an established member. Won't let me post a url.

I purchased a new USB2.0 PCI card with the NEC chipset and it now works. Thanks to all for the advice.
