Ever since I saw my very first iPod back in November (02) I have wanted one. No, not the winky little 5GB but the grand-daddy of them all -- the 20GB model. I've cried & thrown temper tantrums trying to find a way to come up with the ungodly price tag. All to no avail (student life will suck you dry). My only hope was to work the upcoming summer & save up enough. Though I admit, the wait was killing me.

Skip ahead to the beginning of May, I was on my post-exam vacation in the Keys with my beloved sweetie -- we strictly avoided any & all Apple stores between Toronto, Canada & Key West, FLA. It was only after I returned home that I discovered a NEW iPod has been created. OH MY F-ING GOD! I freaked. I was only gone for two weeks yet the whole world had changed -- new iPods & new iTunes. My mission became increasingly urgent. I felt as though I was missing out on history.

I suppose observing my obsessive distress upset my boyfriend. He lovingly offered to lend me the money to buy a new ipod. Of course, that would mean sneaking across the border & buying my new 'pod at the Apple Store in Buffalo, NY -- gotta take advantage of the fantastic interest rate right now (seriously, I got mine in Buffalo for $739 including taxes & exchange. To pay full price in Canada with taxes it would have been about $900). Of course that also meant tossing the bag & box (*sniff*) since we didn't plan on declaring it. How devious! But of course, that's exactly what we did. Yesterday.

The Apple Store is a most dangerous place. It's rather disorienting in there. So many beautiful things in so many places. It really does overwhelm you. So when the guy came up to me and asked me if I needed help, I meekly said, "yes, I would like an ipod please. a 30GB one.". He must've thought I was ######ed. When he first approached us I actually forgot why I was there. Either way I was freaking out. I felt like I was doing something bad. That's what happens when you're poor & you spend over $50 on anything. Anyway, our helper guy brought out the little black box & I immediately plucked it out of his hands & started hugging/petting it. Don't ask why. It just felt natural to do this. He said, "wow, you're lucky". I said, "Yeah, well, I have to work all summer to pay for this so...". The rest was a bit of a blur... my sweetie was paying for it & I was all spacey & weird (I think I was hyperventilating). Amazingly, I was already in their computer system. That kind of freaked me out but it's from when I registered my eMac back in December. *duh*

It took me a while to open it. I was kind of afraid still. I can't really explain my emotional state. I guess I thought I would never really have one & then all of a sudden it was sitting there in front of me. I ended up opening it in the car. I almost cried it was so beautiful! I didn't want to toss the box but I also didn't want the customs guys to take it away in case they searched the car. It's such amazing packaging. :)

I was also shocked that there was a charge to it. So much fun to start exploring your first iPod. I put it in a small black velvet/satin-lined bag I had brought with me & there it sat until we'd safely crossed the border (we claimed the 2 books we bought at Borders & they rather quickly sent us on our way -- I could've kept the #### box!). My boyfriend dropped me off & left (he wasn't feeling well). I fed my cats & sat on the couch, charging my new baby until I finished reading the manual. I was scared to plug it into my eMac for fear that something horrible would happen. It's amazing how protective you get!

I finally plugged the dock in & then the iPod. Amazingly it was all so instant. I thought there would be more fussing with programs or configuration. Nope. Just, "enter your ipod's name" (iTina for now -- Tina is me, though for some reason I kept calling the iPod "baby beluga" on the way home -- don't ask -- but my boyfriend insisted it should be iTina). I registered my new friend & loaded up all my songs -- it was SOOO fast! Impressive indeed!

I listened for a bit (it was late). My only complaint are the earbuds. I have small ears & the Apple 'buds are kinda big. To hear things well & to keep them from falling out you kinda have to shove them in a little deeper & after a few songs it starts to hurt. Think I'll go for the Sony 70/71's. eBay has tons of them.

Anyway, that's my story. I found some PDA screen protectors that I'll plaster on my 'pod today. The whole experience was very stressful, albeit wonderful. I waited so long for this. :)

btw, thanks for reading the whole thing! :)

what a story...and I thought I was out of my right mind to lust after an iPod. I have wanted one since last September and was vaguely saving up to get one.

I saw my first iPod on the train in London a few weeks ago and I was so nervous that I didn't dare ask the guy (sitting opposite me) who had it questions that were burning in my head... Sigh! Will have to wait another day to get my hands on mine.

Thanks (again) for reading it all. I tend to be a little long-winded when telling a story!
Needless to say, the thought of my new baby keeps me going at work. 30 hrs in the last 2 days feeding rock stars & their crew meals & stocking dressing rooms/buses with a myriad of junk (I work catering backstage at concerts & on film sets - sounds glamourous, but trust me, it isn't). At least I know I can come home, climb into a hot bath, and listen to my 'pod. :)
