From the FAQ's section:
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/faqs/answers/how-to-setup-an-ipod-using-windows-98se-me/
Not sure it's been tested for the 5th gen though...

Same problem here. I want to buy my Wife a new 30GB Ipod but her computer is still running win98SE. Will the drivers Ohm provides support the 30GB Ipod. What exceptions, if any, in the capabilities of the 30GB Ipod ?
She has access to friends computer (20 miles away) running XP for initialization but that's too far to run each time she wants to add something to the Ipod.
Will the mod drivers on win98 support pictures and video for the new 5th gen Ipods ????
HELP I need to order the new Ipod NOW so it gets here in time for XMAS !
That FAQ entry is very old - it doesn't cover 4th Gen iPods, Shuffle, Nano and 5th Gen!

Thanks but I reviewed these threads and sites prior to my original post and I am still not certain how things work. The 1st thread is OLD (2003) and is therefore suspect when it comes to new versions of Ipod software and the 5G devices. The edit-update on this thread simply points me to your 2nd suggested link. This site/method (your 2nd link) is beginning to look like the ONLY viable way to get a 5G working on win98 ?.....BUT this site is very vague as to capabilities after you get the drivers installed and win98 recognizing your new Ipod. It does say it supports 5G devices WITH VIDEO...but what does that really mean ???
Assuming I can rip a video clip to MP4 in the format Ipod wants to see and it's audio to ACC format (ie NERO Recode) that the Ipod wants to see....can I then download and PLAY/VIEW on my Ipod ????? Similar question regarding photos/Albums ??? What is used to download these files...Where do I save these type of files...will the Ipod understand/recognize them for what they are and play them when I want to view them ?
Pictures/Albums and VIDEO are the center of my concerns. I realize that in this mode (special drivers and win98) the Ipod is acting as a mass storage device...I know I should be able to download full resolution photos (as simply data) and recover them at a later date to a PC for viewing and/or editing.....this is NOT my question.
Can I download pictures and video, w/audio for viewing on the Ipod ???
What do I use on the win98 PC to load these files properly:
XPLAY ??...Winamp 5 + plugin for Ipod ???...Ipod Agent ?... PodPlus ??... ephpod ??...Videova ??... yamipod ??... etc, etc, etc ????
In this mode (win98 and custom drivers== Ipod working as a mass storage device) is the Ipod still have the software/capability to PLAY picture slideshows and video clips and how do you transfer these Items/Files to the ipod so they work ? Lets keep it simple and assume for the time being there is NO copy protection issues, the format of the video/audio is in the expected/needed format that the Ipod wants to see and doesn't exceed any batery, memory or other spec limitation. Can you do this and HOW ?
I need to order that 30GB Ipod soon to make certain it arrives by XMAS. THANKS in advance for any help !!!

This is in fact really simple - iPod is, from point of view of your PC, just a hard disk. External hard disk.
All kinds of software - iTunes and its replacements (Winamp, XPlay, Yamipod, you name it) work reading and writing to files on iPod drive. Part of that files is hidden and those files makes music visible by the iPod itself.
Normally (that is under Windows ME and newer), iPod is visible as a disk drive just after connection since the proper driver is built-in into newer Windows (it is called USB Mass Storage Device driver or USBSTOR for short).
Then your iTunes or other program can access iPod and manage all music and video data on it.
Windows 98 doesn't have such a driver so you have to add it to your system.
So video functionality depends solely on the software you are installing AFTER your iPod is visible as a disk drive.
I think XPlay has additional video plugin - check on its webpage.
Also, check other programs webpages for video capabilities.

THANKS that all makes more sense now. I think it was a case of reading well over 100 posts in a three day period, some as far back as three years, that just got my brain all funcky on this subject.
So in summary using win98se (if I got this correct):
--- The functionality w/i the "Ipod" stays the same !!!!
--- You don't have access to Itunes so you need an application on the win98se system to replace Itunes and handle "those" functions.
--- The ultimate overall system functionality then depends on the sw app running on your PC within the limits of the original Ipod capability.
Are there any discussion groups, you would recommend, regarding sw to replace Itunes ?
THANKS OHM, Sorry my brain got fried on this subject !
I think you should contact authors of various iTunes replacements. I'd bet most of them are busy implementing photo/video functionalities right now.
Our problem is - most of that software are not Windows 98 SE compatible any more. Things get even worse if you have first edition of 98 (which is my case).
Notable exceptions are Winamp and Real Player (but it still supports older ipods only).
Always check OS compatibility before purchasing such a software package.
