I put songs from itunes music store on my ipod. When I try to play them, it skips through them and does not play. it then ruturns to the main menu. They play fine when using itunes.

I have the same problem with my ipod 60. Mine will play mp3s but it won't play any songs I have purchased on iTunes.
To resolve: reset it. Press and hold for 5 seconds or so the Menu and Center button. After I do that, it will play the purchased songs.
The only caveat is that I have to do this after every sync with the computer. It's a pain in the a** but it works.
