iTunes freezes when iPod is plugged in

Ok, I installed the software for my new 60gb 5G iPod. I already had iTunes (and a library of music) for my old iPod mini. iTunes ran briefly enough for me to copy one video over and name my iPod. I disconnected it, and reconnected it and now whenever my iPod is plugged in iTunes freezes up- it goes back to normal as soon as I disconnect. What should I do? Can I reinstall (uninstall, install again) iTunes without deleting my whole library?

Restore the iPod using the updater and then sync it to iTunes.

How do I do that? Is it a function on the CD? Or are you talking about reformatting its HD?

OK, I used the iPod updater to restore it, and I still have the same problem: iTunes freezes whenever the iPod is plugged in.
