I ordered an iTrip for my ipod about 2 weeks ago, so it should ship this week (they said 3 weeks). I was wondering if the device is worth it. In total, I am spending $60 w/ car charger. Is anyone totally satisfied with the itrip? Reviews? Thanks.

click on the reviews to find the ipodlounge review, it's nnot too in-depth, but it does go over the basics. ipoding also has a review, a bit more in-depth.
both reviews say the product is great, i can't wait for mine to come, i check the front desk at the office almost every hour waiting for it to come!
I ordered mine based on the iPodLounge review!
I can't wait either. :)

did you order from griffin directly? I ordered mine last night (Saturday) with overnight shipping (extra couple bucks). hope to get it Tuesday. the resellers were all "backorder" or "call" so figure getting it from griffin was the way to go.

slackers. ;)
they're at some apple stores, but not the 2 near me. I would have imagined you'd have gotten yours already. I hope to get a confirmation email tomorrow, they said they'd process within 24 hours. I'll let you know.
Ordered directly from Griffin, I'm assuming a delay. :)

I ordered mine back in january when they were first taking pre-orders and have yet to get a shipping confirmation or anything. I e-mailed them about it and got the same old song-n-dance..about a two to three week wait.
If someone who just ordered theirs gets it before me, I'm gonna be upset!

I ordered an iTrip in April and was waiting. Then I ordered it at the online Apple Store last Wednesday...to my suprise it arrived Saturday. Cancelled my Griffin order. You would think that Griffin
would have enough for all the people who ordered it directly.
Couple of things, the FireWire flap does get in the way...it kept
pushing the iTrip up, meaning there wasn't a secure plug connection. I just use a rubber band to hold down the cover. I can't bring myself to cutting/ripping it off.
Does it work with iSkin? Yes and No. Yes it works when it is plugged in, but when you want to use it with a charger, it doesn't
because the front lip of the iSkin is pretty fat, so that extra piece
that goes into the Firewire port does not clear the lip.
I'm still testing it out, but sofar it worth the money. Recption has been good and its very easy to use.
crackhead
05-12-2003, 01:13 PM
so you didnt have to cut your iSkin, to make it work???
Dahead.,..
iCamp

The firewire plug is only there to keep the iTrip in position, right? Could you just cut it off? I would guess the headphone plug would hold the thing in place (though it would probably spin).
ablao
05-12-2003, 04:18 PM
No, I didn't have to cut my iSkin to make it work. The iTrip sits on top fine.
i don't think you can cut the firewire plug off. The image on there site is the prototype-it kinda different on the actual iTrip. I don't have a camera, if I did I would take a picture. The plug is not just a flap, it's part of the housing. The plug has a slot where the firewire male connector goes in, thus holding it in place. Does that make sense? I'll try to get a picture of it.

Griffin basically told me to p*ss off, but in more words. ;)
"The iTrip is now shipping on a first ordered, first shipped basis. We have
received a large amount of orders for the iTrip, so we can't give an
accurate delivery date at this time. :("
I'll keep the order but check-in with the local Apple store from time-to-time. Maybe just order it from Apple directly as someone said they got theirs quickly that way.

My roomies and I went up to the Apple Store in Southdale Minnesota to get a new Power Adaptor for his 12in Powerbook, and we were scoping out the iPod hardware. I said "Man I'd only buy the iTrip." Than one of the guys picked up a box on the bottom shelf and said "here you go." Apparently they just got them in yesterday, and the employees were surprised to get them at all because they "don't get stuff for discontinued products." I was apparently the first one to buy an iTrip there. $35, so its the same price but without the shipping.
Ok, so we loaded up to the software for the iTrip through my friend's Powerbook for the ride home (thanks Apple store for letting me use your firewire cable!) except we couldn't figure it out, at first. We gave up and just used a tape adaptor for the hour ride home. Anyhow, if you run into this problem it loads the playlist into iTunes, not directly onto your iPod, you must drag it over. This could be because of the new iPod software that came out. But now it works fine. Its easy enough to use, and I'm getting a good signal off my home radio.
Ps: The Apple guys at my store were baffled by the iTrip. I wowed them over with my random knowledge of its inner workings. Thanks MacNN and iPodlounge.com!

i'm really wanna get mine soon. thanks for the heads-up on getting them quicker from the apple online store, but since i'm in Canada, the canada apple online store still doesn't have them in stock.
REALLY wanna get this for the long weekend. i'd love to be the DJ for the deck party without having to run in and fiddle with an ipod hooked up to the sound system.

I ordered mine today from MacWarehouse Canada. $49.99 CDN is right on par with the MSRP. Of course, it's $12 to get it to me. Seems a bit steep...
Anyway, they said backordered until May 31. They are getting a shipment of 30 units, already have orders for 27.
Interested Canadians would be advised to get on that.

the iTrip does transmit on pretty much any frequency. it loads a bunch (from 87.9 - 107.9) onto your iPod and you can pick the one(s) that work best for you. this is different than the Belkin unit which has a switch to select one of 4.

ibons, i seem to be bumping into you all over tonight!
i was actually about to place an order for that transmitter you mentioned, but held off for the itrip. i think it is the fact that it is ment to work so well with the ipod, and doesn't require batteries (THAT sold me) that made me hold off till the itrip ships.

Well, I now have my iTrip! It has been exactly 4 months since I ordered it. My invoice had the order date as January 13 and the ship date as May 13!
Here is my review: I have not tested any other FM transmitters, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I must say, it sounds great. I have mostly used it with the default station in my own car. In my wife's car, that station didn't work so hot, so I found an empty station on the dial and programmed it into the ipod and it worked, no problem. We even did a test while taking my car into the shop this morning. She followed behind me and had her radio tuned to the same station as the iTrip was broadcasting too. She could hear the music when she was directly behind me at a stoplight, but not while we were driving. She even pulled up right beside me while driving and didn't get anything. Pretty cool, regardless. I could see her rocking to the beat when we were at the stoplight. :)
As far as the sound quality, it is very clear. There is a little degradation since it is being broadcast to the radio, but that is to be expected. I am very happy with it and thrilled that I won't have to lug cds around in my car all the time!

glad it is working well for you! mine works well, too, just need to find the right frequency/frequencies for your area. the way they implement this is great since you have more than 3-4 options. i've tried a few but haven't found one in my car that lets me sit the ipod on the passenger seat... i put it in the storage space on the dash which is right near the antenna. i'll try some other frequencies when i have time. i've got a line-in on my headunit so won't use the iTrip in the car much, if at all, but it's still fun doing the testing. :D

The firewire flap on my 20 GB WinPod comes off quite easily.
Just pull it out towards either the front or back.
You can even re-insert it without too much hassle using a small blunt object to push it back in.
All this without damaging either the iPod or the flap itself.
My iTrip should be here tomorrow (i live in Holland, europe)
I would have had it allready if i were home when fedex tried to deliver :( .
It's HERE !!! :) :) :)
My first impressions are good.
Managed to find a clean frequency and set the iTrip to it, sounds loud and clear. (keep the volume between 40 to 80% to avoid distortion)
The documentation doesn't mention how to get the frequency files on the iPod if you're using Xplay or Ephpod, the installer is only compatible with Musicmatch.
I think this is kinda silly since the first thing most Windows users do is get rid of
musicmatch in favour of Xplay or Ephpod.
Good thing i found the instructions on this forum long before i received my iTrip.:)
I'll let you al know if any issues arise....
Happily iTrippin' across holland !

Can anyone compare the sound quality of the iTrip to a cassette adapter? I'd jump all over the iTrip if 3 or 4 of you told me it out-performed my cassette adapter.
trinity
05-20-2003, 02:06 AM
I'd say it out performs a cassette adapter. The only problem that I have is living in the Bay Area CA I don't have much options for radio stations with no bleed.
It's funny, the one I do use, works great if I hold the pod, I assume it's using me as an antenna.
One added tip, I have about a 10 year old, but perfectly good reciever in the house, and for that it works FANTASTIC.

hey, i also live in the bay area trinity. i don't have an itrip yet because i'm waiting for the new ones that will fit on the new model ipods, but are most of the stations filled already? how about when your driving down the road, do stations that come in range overpower the itrip's reception and you are forced to change frequencies often?
brian
trinity
05-20-2003, 12:14 PM
Yeah, so far. I've not played with changing the stations TOO much while driving yet, but it seems there's an aweful lot of bleed over in our area.
I think 90.1 if I recall has been my best bet so far, but it too gets overpowered by bleed over, unless I physically hold my iPod, which is a pain with a stick in a sports car... :D
applejack
05-20-2003, 12:23 PM
trinity - Do you get a high pitched whine, at times, when you are listening to your iPod thru the iTrip in your car? I have. I didn't get it with the default station, but I have since tuned it to others and don't know how to get the default station back (since it isn't an option in the itrip playlist).
Sometimes the whine is not noticable and sometimes, usually when the music is getting quiet, you can hear it more.
I have written to Griffin to ask for an mp3 or a way to get the default station back. I'll let you guys know what they say.
Overall, I love the iTrip! I live in Santa Rosa (is that North Bay?) and the FM dial is pretty saturated here too. I have found a few stations that are pretty clear. 87.9 being the clearest.

Bleed (over) is when you can partially hear 90.1 on station 90.3 for example.

I just got my itrip and it is not working well at all. First off, it only stays on for one minute. Right after one minute, it just shuts down - time after time. It is firmly in place and connected. I can't change frequencies or turn the blue light on or off. Basically, this one must be screwed up. I haven't seen a post of anyone that seems to have this problem. I'll get with Griffin first thing tomorrow as their support pages don't really go past basic info. Kinda sucks after the long wait. I hope everyone else has better luck.

Make sure your volume is between 40 and 80%. If it's too low, it'll turn off, if it's too high, it'll distort. There's definitely a 'sweet spot' with these.
carevalo

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I did have the volume at almost every setting between 40%-90%. I tried this about 10 different times. I can't change frequencies either. I think this particular piece is a piece.

I understand your frustration with the situation. I just got off the phone w/ Griffin, and they were willing to swap my jacked up itrip with a new and improved (working) one today if necessary. Luckily for me, the apple store near me has one to swap out.
They do believe my problems were just a hardware issue. After speaking with the people from Griffin, it appears they are just very back ordered and are working double time to fill the past few months of order asap. I imagine that the apple stores had some kind of priority in the ordering process. The best luck is to find one in a local apple store as their allocations come in. I was on a waiting list at my store. Good luck.

Now I have the replacement itrip for the defective one I orginally received. Much better as this one actually works!
Once you find a station that is available (not easy to do in Houston) the reception is good. We're obviously not talking cd quality, but it is good. I noticed there are places where the signal becomes better than others. I still think that the tape adapter is the way to go if you're basing the decision purely on sound quality. The itrip is nice and convienient with no wires, but the sound quality could be better. It just sounds a little too muffled to me (even after adjusting my eq settings on my head unit). Maybe just a product of Houston's very full frequency bands.
MikeM
05-22-2003, 01:50 PM
My itrip was just delivered, exactly one week after ordering from apple.com.
i cancelled my griffen order and have no reason to suspect i would have received one from them anytime soon. it took 3 days from me to hear back from them that my order had been cancelled.
i still think they are a great company and are making a lot of really nice products [the powermate looks really cool]. but if you are interested in an itrip soon, look to apple.
i'll post a review here as soon i can.
MikeM
05-22-2003, 10:18 PM
i'm pleased so far. the sound quality is decent but not great. since i'll be using it mostly in the car, i don't really need great sound because my stock system and the acoustic nightmare that cars are wouldn't do it justice.
this thing is really picky about its location and orientation with the stereo. if you get one and have issues, keep trying. i've found moving the thing a matter of inches will make a huge difference.
i first tried it in my living room. in portland, maine, i found 87-88 frequncies to all be good. but even as i approached a frequency with a station on it, the itrip usualy overpowered it quite well. i haven't placed it in direct competition with a station, but i haven't had any bleed yet.
i didn't do a test to see how far i could get from the stereo, but it was about 10-12 feet away. if i keep the ipod in my hand or on my leg [touching my body] and pointed at the stereo antenna, it worked great. it was a bit scratchy if i set it on the arm of the chair. i figure for indoor use [if i'm too lazy to hook up the cable] i can always just set the ipod close to the stereo.
i then took it out to the car. it was good there too, but i noticed that holding it definitely helped. i was concerned about this, as i don't really want to hold it while i drive. i pulled over and started pointing the thing all around, mostly in the direction of the car's antenna behind me. then i discovered it comes in really clearly right near the head unit itself. i pulled out my cup holder, which is right above the head, and placed the ipod in it. it works great. the ipod is secure and the sound is clear.
i did notice a high pitched whine but it was solved by just nudging the ipod around. since the cup holder holds the ipod securely, its just a matter of fidgeting with it a few moments.
overall, i'm very happy with it. i was so sick of my cassette adapter. the cord was shot and noisy and the #### thing would stick and the auto-reverse would kick in repeatedly. this is a much better solution. i would certainly recommend it, unless you demand only the best sound quality at all times or have no patience.

I was on the Griffin waiting list for weeks and, after cancelling there, ordered and received it from the Apple online store within days.
I was ready to return it, since the sound was thoroughly distorted, when I realized I wasn't in the "sweet spot" for volume on my iPod. Once I put it at about 50%, the sound was good and clear.
It's not CD quality, but it's remarkably good. Well worth the $44 I paid (including 2-day shipping).
Anyone know if this works for other devices, if you don't change the frequency from the default setting?
MikeM
05-24-2003, 09:02 PM
do you mean using the trip with other devices?
i think the problem with that would be how the itrip is powered. i believe it is powered by the extra 'ring' around the plug.
i've heard of people using it with an ibook that has the same headphone port as the ipod.

Mr Big
05-25-2003, 11:40 PM
I cancelled my order with Griffin when I found an iTrip at the Apple Store in Glendale. So here are my initial impressions. This sound quality of this thing is dependent on not only the area in which you live, but also the car which you drive. I have a '99 Mercedes where the iTrip is virtually useless. The signal fades in and out and the way to get the best reception is to hold on to it while you're driving. But, interestingly, it works great in my old '75 BMW 2002. It locks on to a station and sounds great without any static no matter where I drive. I also found that it will lock on to frequencies in the BMW and yet in the Mercedes it has trouble with those same frequencies. The Mercedes has its antenna embedded into the rear glass whereas the BMW has an old style antenna on the driver's side A pillar which might have alot to do with it. So it looks like I'll have to stick with the cassette adapter in the MB until someone comes out with an aux in adapter that'll plug into the CD output on the back of the radio.
Mr Big
05-26-2003, 06:29 PM
After driving around L.A. for a day in the BMW I found that the iTrip didn't sound as good as when I was driving around the other day. Although there wasn't a lot of bleed from other stations the high end sounded distorted most of the time.
I ordered an iTrip from the online Apple store two days ago and thier status is showing a shipping date of on or before June 10.

Has anyone in Austin, TX tried the iTrip yet? Sorry, I'm trying to go through these reviews and match good/bad reviews with locations...
I am so frustrated because there is a company PIE (pie.net) that makes adapters for CD changers to connect in aux input. I'm looking at getting a 2003 Ford Escape, and of course the 2003 Escapes' cd changers have changed, and these adapters do not work.
So I'm debating whether to get an iTrip and use it in Austin area, or take out the factory installed system and get something from crutchfield with AUX input. I like the look of the factory installed system though, and there's a possibility that PIE might someday down the road make new adapters for 2003. But until then...I'd be stuck without my beloved ipod, which is UNACCEPTABLE ;)
Long story short, any reviews from austin? Thanks!

Austin TX here. Got my iTrip yesterday and have pretty much gone through all the frequencys and have found that I get the best reception at 97.7. Sound quality is good but not as good as a cassette adapter.

Thanks Doyal...thankfully I think I've found another company that makes an adapter that will plug into 2003 Escape OEM CD-6 changer to allow AUX input....will update once I hear that it works.

I have come to the conclusion that the iTrip won't work well for me in my car. For one, I get a high-pitched whine most of the time from it (which doesn't happen on my home receiver) which can be very annoying. Plus the bleed over and unpredictability of the transmission really distracts me while driving. More than once I have been fiddling with my iPod when I should be paying more attention to the road.
So I have ordered an AUX input adapter for my Pioneer cd player. I should get it today or tomorrow and I will post about the quality, once I have it installed and working. I really just want to be able to plug in my iPod and not have to worry about it after that.

This happens all the time to me even without the iTrip. I am constanstly changing songs, looking for other songs etc. I think it scares my wife quite a bit :D

I bought an iTrip today and am setting it up on my iPod. I have to say that Griffin Technology should be ashamed of themselves for that installer. I can see absolutely no reason why MusicMatch Jukebox was required to install a playlist and a few sound files.
Like most Windows users, I mostly use EphPod to manage the music on my iPod. MusicMatch Jukebox is difficult to use, installs a bunch of extra, unnecessary crap, breaks existing working configurations, and generates this nasty, commercial, privacy-draining feeling. So, I installed it to get the iTrip installer to work ...
I am, of course, now completely re-installing all the music on my iPod since MusicMatch Jukebox managed to wipe all but 10 songs out of the 18MB of music on my iPod when it synchronized.
Special thanks to Griffin Technology and MusicMatch for the inconvenience. I am tempted to return the iTrip just because it was so inconvenient to install.

Dev I dislike MMJB as much, maybe more, than the next person but in Griffin's defense, MusicMatch is Apple's bundled iPod solution. I think Apple is a better target for your annoyance in this case.
Still waiting anxiously for my iTrip.

I got a reply back from Griffin Technology support. They acknowledge that the installation situation is not ideal. They are planning to post instructions for manually installing the playlist and MP3 files with other software (such as EphPod) on their site.

I finally got that "Oh So Waited E-Mail" from Griffin today. It'll be here in two days. I've only heard good things about iTrip, until now. Hmm...Seems like a hit or miss thing.

Well, I have installed my AUX adapter for my car stereo and I have to say that it rules. Totally clear sound and I can set the iPod where I want in the car with no thoughts about transmission problems.
If they make an AUX adapter for your car stereo, I would recommend that over an iTrip for iPod in car listening. However, the iTrip still has a ton of uses in places where an input isn't available.

Any news? I'd really appreciate the info, since I'm driving a 2003 Ranger and am in the same situation.
Swapping out cds all the time is starting to get on my nerves, need the ipod there.

I just received my I Trip (ordered from Griffin Technology directly). It worked perfectly except for the high pitched whining noise. I noticed another reader got that to stop by moving the position of the IPOD, but that hasn't been successful for me. Does anyone else have any suggestions or explanations for why this occurs? Thanks.

Yesterday was my Birthday and my father surprised me with the iTrip. Honestly, I'm not terribly impressed. The majority of the time, it sounds like a cheap AM radio station. For a sound quality whore, the high pitch squeal, static and bleed through gets old QUICK. I suppose it's a handy little gadget for listening to your trusty iPod in a car without a tape player, but if it's quality sound you're looking for, I think you're going to be disappointed.
