Microsoft plans to add support for a clock in portable music players and other consumer-electronics devices. The clock would provide a "time out" feature much like that used in PC versions of its DRM software. If customers don't pay their monthly subscription bills by a certain date, access to the files on those devices is cut off.

That kind of thinking is why other models haven't worked until the AMS. I don't want to pay a subscription to listen to music I've already paid for and downloaded. And I don't want to "subscribe" at all. I don't like enough artists on any one major label to pay the label a monthly fee.
Something makes me suspect that MS is more on the side of record companies than Apple thus far has been. MS has already thrown their hat in the ring with big corporations when it comes too the DCMA; I suspect a music service by MS would reflect the same interests. *cough* (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/25940.html) *cough* (http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105-964876.html) *cough* (http://weblog.siliconvalley.com/column/dangillmor/archives/000755.shtml).
